Latics boss Steve Bruce first checked out Gera's availability midway through last season and has renewed his interest in the 29-year-old as he looks to strengthen his squad.
Gera is coming out of contract and is tipped to leave The Hawthorns on a Bosman deal.
He has been attracting interest from a number of Premier League clubs and has been offered a new deal by Albion but has refused to sign it.
Bruce could make a move because his own midfield ace Antonio Valencia remains a target for the top Premier League clubs.
Gera - who can also play on the right - is currently on international duty with Hungary and is being watched by scouts.
Bruce plans to bring in at least seven new players and remains interested in the Birmingham City duo of Olivier Kapo and Sebastian Larsson.
He is also on the lookout for a third keeper to join Chris Kirkland and Mike Pollitt, with Carlo Nash joining Premier League newcomers Stoke after a loan spell. Tweet
