Latics target Robinson

Paul Robinson
WIGAN Athletic are lining up West Brom's Paul Robinson to replace England Under-21 star Leighton Baines, who looks set to leave the club this week.

Latics officials seem resigned to losing left-back Baines who is understood to be `extremely keen' on a move to Everton after six years at Wigan.

Manchester City are the latest Premiership club to be linked with Baines but Everton are firm favourites to land the player who last week rejected a £6m move to Sunderland.

Baines' move to Goodison Park could be finalised in the next 48 hours following further talks between Wigan chairman Dave Whelan and his Everton counterpart Bill Kenwright. In order to match Wigan's £6m valuation of Baines, Everton are likely to offer close on £5m and include midfield veteran Lee Carsley as part of the deal.

Carsley came close to joining Wigan earlier this summer and he is a player Wigan boss Chris Hutchings would be interested in signing.

Hutchings may prefer to bring in Carsley because a planned swoop for Fulham's Michael Brown is still being held up due to personal terms.

Baines played the full first half for Wigan in Saturday's 4-0 win over Halifax Town.

Julius Aghahowa (2), Emile Heskey and Jason Koumas were on the scoresheet in a comfortable victory.

Wigan travel to Rotherham tomorrow.

Another Wigan player who could also soon be on the way out is Senegalese striker Henri Camara. He is said to be keen on a move to France, but Bolton and Blackburn have also been linked with the forward, who has yet to figure in Wigan's pre-season line-ups.

Latics have also been strongly linked with the Monaco centre-forward Mohammed Kalon.
