The 32-year-old has been without a club since his release from Ewood Park at the end of last season.
County boss Dietmar Hamann, who knows Benjani from their time together at City, has given the former Zimbabwe international the green light to train with the
Hatters ahead of the new season. He took part in his first training session at Manor Farm yesterday. And without another offer on table, Hamann is refusing to rule out the possibility of Benjani turning out in the Blue Square Premier next season.
Benjani cost City £3.87m when he moved from Portsmouth to City in January 2008. But with first-team opportunities limited, he played eight games on loan at Sunderland before making a permanent switch to Blackburn in 2010.
Hamann is desperate to bolster his attacking options before the first game of the season against Forest Green on Friday. He had a £100,000 bid for Bury striker Ryan Lowe rejected before the 32-year-old pledged his future to the Shakers.
County have had an offer for Halifax striker Jamie Vardy knocked back and have also registered an interest in Fleetwood’s George Donnelly.
Hamann has brought in nine new faces since taking charge at Edgeley Park but director Tony Evans has promised they won’t be the last.
“There are more players to follow with Didi and Willie McStay proving a very attractive coaching team,” said Evans.
“Some have turned down bigger moves to come and play under our management team.” Tweet

I hope you sign him on a pay as go go basis. Otherwise make sure you have a dedicated table in the physio's room for him.
Wow all the way from the Barclays FA Premier League to the Blue Square Premier.
Ludicrous - he is far too good for that level.
what a ridiculous story.
Hey this guy is as good as Dzeko and I cannot believe for one single moment he will sign for County...
Latest news, they signed a 19 year old fullback from Posh.
Come on County ........... Friday night is County night?
Just saw a pig flying over Stockport with a dodo on its back!!
I can never understand how fans of
certain "Premier league" teams can
make fun of teams in the lower
leagues.
Let`s face it it`s all about "MONEY"
and I think the game has been spoilt
slightly because of it.
Money brings success but there is even
a gap in the "Premier league" now ,between
the teams who have it and the teams who don`t.
It`s the equivalent of a 100m sprint between a
greyhound and a small terrier.
We might have been a few divisions apart,
but do you remember that cup match at
Old Trafford about 1978? when Stockport
were narrowly beat 3-2.We were out scored
but not out played.
In them days it was possible to watch Stockport
play on the friday night and then one of the Manchester
clubs on the saturday.
.You felt you were being loyal to your "local team"
and got the added bonus of "First Division" action
the following day.
Money only came into the game in the
early 90s.I don`t think so.
Don`t you remember "Trevor Francis",
"Steve Daley"e.t.c.
Have you got a poor memory or a selective one?
Will 19 titles reply to this?
