Speculation is mounting that Arsenal's Samir Nasri could be one of those, while a winger is also on the agenda for the manager.
And with a demanding Champions League campaign pending, Mancini is keen to bolster the ranks.
Mancini said: "We are missing other players, we don't have enough players for all the season. This is a problem at the moment.
"I think we need another two or three players."
Meanwhile, Mancini has downplayed suggestions Carlos Tevez could move to Inter Milan in a swap deal involving full-back Maicon.
City's wantaway talisman has been linked persistently with Inter but Mancini insists there has been no approach and the Argentinian will return to normal training next week.
Tevez is not available for Sunday's season-opening Community Shield clash against Manchester United having been granted a 21-day break following the end of his involvement in the Copa America.
Tevez, 27, has made clear his desire to leave City but his hopes of rejoining his former Brazilian club Corinthians collapsed last month.
While other players such as Craig Bellamy and Emmanuel Adebayor are unlikely to figure in Mancini's plans, the Italian expects Tevez to continue playing a full role if a move does not materialise.
Mancini said: "He doesn't have another team.
"Carlos is a professional player. If he doesn't have another team in the next 10 days or two weeks I think he will play for us and play serious like last year, like always."
When asked whether Tevez was likely to move before the transfer deadline at the end of the month, Mancini told a press conference on Friday: "I don't know. A lot can happen in one month but if he stays I am happy."
The rumours linking the FA Cup winners with Maicon highlight a lack of cover for first-choice right-back Micah Richards.
Because of that another Argentinian, defender Pablo Zabaleta, has returned to training and will be available to play at Wembley on Sunday.
Mancini said: "Carlos comes back on Monday because he has 21 days after the Copa America.
"Zaba is here because if we had a problem with Micah we have only one fit right-back."
City's £38million record summer signing Sergio Aguero, who was also involved in the Copa America with Argentina, will be on the bench this weekend.
The former Atletico Madrid forward has had blistered feet but is now training as normal after a 20-minute session on Thursday.
Mancini said: "Sergio is okay, he will train today.
"He is not 100% ready but he is fit to come on the bench."
Which three players would you choose? Have your say.

Mancini is a managerial God but he does make me laugh when he says he wants 2 or 3 more players. Find me a manager who hasn't said that! Personally I think City now have a squad capable of winning the league if not this year then next. So looking forward to seeing Silva link the play with Aguero and Balotelli smashing home the goals. The future's bright the future's Blue!
Zabaleta should be first choice over Micah!
Sergio is going to do what on the bench???
Zabba can make it back from the copa america
Aguero has made it back from the copa america
Tevez decides he needs longer.
He is a clown Get rid soon as he doesnt deserve to play for us.
Scum Bag
The Manager is correct.
I can't think of another team in the Premier league with a choice of right backs as good as Micah and Zaba. Boyata is also very capable in a pinch though it's clearly not his best position. And lest we forget, Onouha is also still on the books.
What I'm getting at is, I can't think of a position we need someone less than right back.
Cant wait to see aguero make his debut on sunday, got tickets for the match so bring it on!
I think nasri will be a great additon to the team if he comes as he's just what we need. With him and david silva making runs and supplying dzeko, aguero and balotelli it will be frightening. Nasri also scores goals too and as much as im obsessed by david silva, he' not as clinical in front of goal as nasri. If we dont buy anymore players, then Im happy with the team now to be honest and after seeing them play inter milan, i was really impressed. Kolarov and dzeko have shown a big improvement since coming back from pre-season. Excited to see suarez and rekik come through in a few years and also gai assulin - whats he up to these days? Anybody know?
I think it`s patently obvious Mancini wants to win everything this season. The way he`s trying to go about his job, it seems to me he might even be overtaking the board in ambition!
I would guess Mancini`s first choice scenario would be two top class sides in the squad to pick from, and the likes of Boyata, Weiss etc would go out on loan to the strongest competitions available for some seasoning.
No doubt there are some interesting conversations going on in our offices at the moment, because managers are notoriously unaligned to financial responsibilities at a club.
I don`t agree with the way Mancini handles everything, but his overall managerial ability speaks for itself.
Really please to see Mancini's preview on the mcfc website.
It's sad I know, but I really do enjoy watching him field all those questions from reporters desperately trying to trip him up or make a gaffe, but he never does, he always seem very calm, relaxed and highly professional in the way he deals with the media.
Welcome back Roberto!
regardless of our position, a good manager will always say that he has need of 2 or 3 more players. it keeps the lads honest.
Well we've got the back up keeper although I've never heard of him, but trust Roberto's judgement. Obviously if we can land Nasri that would be central midfield sorted, and finally we need a winger. I believe one has been mentioned Circe ?? but again I know nothing about him.
One thing is for sure, we go into a season with very high expectations, and I fully expect further trophies this year.
Nasri, Messi and Iniesta?
Go Bobby go
Historic 'double treble' awaiting to be served up Sunday. Manchester City three consecutive wins at Wembley. Manchester United three consecutive defeats.
Avanti Manchester City !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Whilst i now hold Mancini as a very very good football manager why has he given Tevez an extra holiday ????? To the best of my knowledge all other players who were involved in the Copa America have reportrd back to club duty ????? We MUST at CITY start to use the 'carrott and Stick' rewarding loyal players with a few carrots and giving trouble causers (Tevez,Ade,Balo) some serious STICK !!!!
Discipline and respect for the Badge are so,so important to most fans !!!!!!!
Rewarding a player who wants to leave ????????????????????
IMO we do need 2/3 more quality players !!! Last season was fantastic but i think we 'papered over the cracks' too many times. Having come over and watched our defeat at Everton the second half display worried me !!! Lets try and get to 25 QUALITY players with 2/3 covers in every position !!!
Players who are QUALITY an Versetile like Komps, Zab are priceless.
@Clint - I hope our Managers rich vein of poor form continues *opens trophy cabinet and reaches for the brasso*.
Dont understand if the pursuit of Maicon is true, Richards is better by far at the moment and Zab is far more reliable. As others have said Maicon was woeful against Bale and really shown up for both his lack of pace and poistional sense. If we are going to swap Tevez it has to be for Sneijder plus 15 million or Sneijder plus 15 million to acquire Eto too. Cant understand our pursuit of Cerci (if true) as SWP is as good and on pre season form, looks as good as ever and we have Weiss too. Only Mata looks slightly better and Nasri would add the extra creativity we need. If we are to sign another right back, buy the Dutch guy Van Deweil (not sure of spelling) tho certainly no better than Micah again!
2 or 3 new players? I don't think so Bobby, we don't need anyone now aside from another playmaker - Nasri maybe? We've got to start easing our younger players into the mix at some point, continually buying isn't going work long term because we have to reduce our costs.
There is something not quite right about Carlos having an extended leave while Zaba is back with the club.
To say that we only have one fit right back is nonsense.
We have signed 'Robbie' Savic who can play at fullback and at centre back.
I may be wrong but is seems to me that Carlos is being given more time to find another club and Mancini's remarks are just a smoke screen.
Why is he also using the media to moan about not having enough players, all this should be kept 'in house' in my opinion.
As it looks as if SWP is surplus despite showing good pre-season form, then why not use Adebayor in a swap deal for some one like Lennon who's pace has been wasted at Spurs.
The reason Tevez is being given more time off ,is that anyone who is going to pay 50milion for one of your players you dont want him being injured and spoiling the deal ,so maybe something is going to happen sooner or later ,the quicker the better for me we need the nasri deal done as soon as possible and if Roberto says he needs a winger we need a winger ,all the best for the coming season fellow blues onward and upward. Keith
Haven't we still got Roque as well as Bellamy and Adebayor? Gee Hughes, Marwood and Cook really stitched us up with the contracts theses guys got.
What’s need is a ruthless attitude for goals and not sit back on 2-0 leads.
Rudolph, Barton and Manchester United.
A Ménage à Trois made in Heaven!
why oh why is swp being allowed to leave? He still has a lot to offer and is blue through and through. I don't think we need a winger, I really don't. Swp, Silva, Milner, Kolarov, Johnson are all comfortable in that position, as is Weiss.
I still think the most important thing we need and will cost pence is that sign as you come out of the dressingroom for the match, THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT MATCH YOU WILL EVER PLAY IN, MAKE SURE WE WIN IT
Well it seems that yet another ex-rag has things to say McQueen the donkey another leg end from the swamps youth policy NOT . Oh so sorry I forgot he is another mercenary . Yes mercenary history is a long one at the swamp
