Kennedy in plea to fans

CHESHIRE Sport owner Brian Kennedy wants the Edgeley Park fans to continue their inspirational support for Sammy McIlroy's side.

"I'd like to thank each and every supporter who came along against Bristol City," said Kennedy, who flew in from his home in Majorca to watch last Saturday's 2-0 victory.

"There is no doubt in my mind that the fans played a key role in our tremendous victory.

"I'm asking them now to recreate that atmosphere at our next home game.

"With Sheffield Wednesday bringing around 3,500 fans we are working hard to attract a 10,000 attendance. Please encourage your family and friends to get down to Edgeley Park - your support does make a difference.

"I thought the supporters were absolutely incredible on Saturday and I wish the atmosphere was the same when Sale Sharks played their games."

Kennedy went into the changing room to address the County players before the Bristol City game.

"Before the game, I asked Sammy [McIlroy] if I could speak to the players, it was really just meant to give Sammy some support.

"I don't believe the result was a reaction to what I had said, but perhaps it contributed towards it.

"I asked whether they realised how privileged they were to be playing professional football for a living and to be sat there in their County shirts."

Meanwhile County winger Kevin Ellison has joined Lincoln City on a month's loan.

Ellison, who joined County from Leicester City for £55,000 in November 2001, has not started a first-team game under Sammy McIlroy since October last year.

  • FRASER McLachlan scored the late goal that gave Stockport County a 2-1 victory over Irish champions Shelbourne on Tuesday afternoon.

Kevin Ellison had given County an early lead at Stockport's training ground in Timperley, before Glenn Fitzpatrick equalised just before the break.

"It was a good workout and gave some of the squad players the chance of a game," said boss Sammy McIlroy.

Shelbourne were in England for a week-long training camp.
