Latics have been linked with Beckett in the past and could swoop, with owner Dave Whelan not keen on recruiting either Manchester City's Shaun Goater or Peterborough's Leon McKenzie.
Wigan boss Paul Jewell has always admired Beckett and will no doubt check out his availability.
Whelan wants to push for back-to-back promotion next term and is looking to bring in at least four new players. He wants to see a big front man who is powerful in the air leading the line alongside the likes of Nathan 'Duke' Ellington and Neil Roberts.
Whelan knows Beckett has a presence, and says: 'Some good players are going to be available and we know what is needed. It is my ambition to take us into the Premiership.'
Whelan has agreed a new three-year deal with manager Jewell. The contract will be finalised when the boss returns from a short break.
