ADAM Proudlock fired Stockport into the FA Cup third round with
a double to dump League Two high-flyers Wycombe.
The former Wolves striker, still turning out for Jim Gannon's side
on a non-contract basis, scored from the spot to drag his team back
into the tie and then, with 14 minutes left, swept home the winner
to leave County fans dreaming of one of the big boys.
The County fans' glee was complete in the fourth minute of injury
time when their former player Jermaine Easter, who put his side
ahead in the first half, blazed over the bar from six yards with a
replay beckoning.
Perhaps the stirring comeback was inspired by the presence in the
crowd of former Edgeley Park hero Andy Preece, who scored a
glorious winner the last time County claimed a big scalp in this
competition, against Premiership side Queen's Park Rangers in
1993.
But it was a win that proved the growing maturity of Gannon's
collection of feisty youngsters and raw loan players, after they
had fallen behind to a goal from former player Jermaine Easter in
the first half.
County had their chances in that half, Proudlock turning a shot
across the face of goal when Tes Bramble and David Poole had
fashioned an opening from nothing.
They paid for such profligacy on 34 minutes when the visitors kept
it simple - a pass to Kevin Betsy on the right, measured cross and
textbook header from Easter.
Proudlock squandered another chance but on 41 minutes it was his
invention which led to the equaliser. A neat pass inside Russell
Martin found Poole racing through on goal and the defender
desperately tripped the winger from behind.
Proudlock slotted his spot kick in the corner.
