JIM Gannon is set to present the County board with his New Year shopping list after watching his side fall to play-off rivals Bury.
But the County boss can take heart from the words of opposition boss Chris Casper, who is tipping both sides to be in the promotion mix at the end of the season.
Gannon was unhappy with his side's below-par showing, even though they came up against a Shakers' side that Casper said had put in the best performance since he took over.
The Irish boss saw his side slide back into the bottom half of the table, and his response was to suggest that there will be significant changes in the near future.
He still has money unspent from his summer transfer budget, and suggested he would be looking to bring in new blood next month, possibly including Bury's Brian Barry-Murphy.
He said: "Most worrying for me is that there are not enough players in the squad who are out-shining others. We have quite a lot of `OK players' and what we need now are players who can raise the game, eight or nine of them, and if we get those it will show in performances and results.
"Having taken stock over the last week in preparation for the board meeting, I have assessed the squad and we know there are one or two areas we have a problem with because there are players who don't seem to have progressed over the last year or so.
Displeasure
"If they are not going to play a part for us we have to go out and find them another club, and we have to work hard to track the players who will enhance this squad."
Gannon's displeasure was counter-balanced by Casper's upbeat assessment of his own team, after Glyn Hurst had poached the opening goal after just 100 seconds, and Andy Bishop clipped in a stylish second goal after the break to reflect the run of play.
The club went into the game under the dark cloud of possible FA Cup expulsion, but Casper was pleased that his players seemed galvanised by that threat.
"It obviously wasn't on the minds of the players with a performance like that. It's something we have to deal with as and when the time arrives.
"It was the lads' best performance since I have been here - we were magnificent. I firmly believed this could be a defining moment in our season.
"I think both these clubs could be thereabouts at the end of the season," he said.
Do you think both teams will be in the promotion mix at the end of the season? Have your say.

I hope a new Goalkeeper is top of his list!
also a new right back is needed, Poole being signed on a permanent deal and a big 6'ft plus targetman who can score on a regular basis.
I think this was (apart from the Shrewsbury home game) the worst performance for County this season. James Spencer was the main culprit, and it's Ok the MEN reporting Bishop's goal was a well clipped effort, but he was ably assisted by the woeful Spencer.
Bury will do very well to stay where they are for the rest of the season, as for County, can see us getting skittled at Wycombe if we have Spencer in goal
Scotty
Didn't go to Bury. Had a bad dose of the two bob bits and throwing up. It sounds as though I didn't miss much!! Got to echo the JS comments. As I've said in earlier posts, good shotstopper but shocking on anticipation of crosses and rushing out. He was in no mans land for both goals!!!
It looks like Spencer will never be able to live this one down. I'm still hoping something of Ruddy will have rubbed off on him under JG's guidance. Just hope he's not going to flip from never coming out to always doing it. Surely it's something that can be worked on in training?
Improving in goal would be great just as improvement at any position is desirable BUT how on earth can a goalie be at fault for his team not scoring a goal????
NO GOALS = NO WIN no matter what.
My brother-in-law is a good brickie but if he bricked up County's goal it won't put owt in the other teams onion bag so County wouldn't win.
Cue someone to say, "You weren't there", I doubt if I had been that I would have been saying, "Oh that damn Spencer, he just missed another sitter!"
HOHOHO

Browny what a strange philiosophy you have. You seem to be saying that it doesn't matter if we continue to leak goals primarily because of JS's mistakes, it's the strikers fault for not scoring. It is obvious that Ruddy's positive impact on the team was a significant factor in the run we had during his loan period, since he has gone it is more than coincidence that we are leaking goals and slipping down the table. If we seriously want to get into the play offs or better we must improve where we can and I for one believe that getting a better keeper than Spencer is not that difficult, I will be very surprised if he is first choice when the transfer window opens in January.
michael welch centre half currently with accrington would have already been at stockport only for Turner messing it up,
scored goal of the season at edgley park
Shouldn't worry about it Rob. Browny's just a wind up merchant. His oddball comments continually pepper this site.
I dont like to harp on about it but i do think Spencer needs to really pull his finger out...and Soon! As even though us Stockport fans like to get behind our players, he is really pushing his luck and the ironic cheers when he actually comes for a cross will soon be happening at home games! And before anyone says he is still young can i point out that he has played at least half a season (per season) for the last 4!!! Please Ruddy come back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ps is it rue that HE SIGNED A TWO YEAR EXTENTION in pre-season?? Hope not!
Yeah, the guy knows it all from his hideaway. You dont watch us so you cant criticise other supporters comments when they pay their money and go every week. FACT Spencer is a liability. FACT The defence is constantly under pressure with him in the side and cos of this dont go into the oppositions half that often. You did not see Ruddys impact. Everyone watching could see it. So stop boring us with your drivel. Stick to Ice Hockey!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hope the Bury result was just a hiccup - I guess we were due a bad performance after doing so well since Shrewsbury game. I have this feeling that Wycombe will come back down to earth with a bump after their midweek heroics - lets hope the lads get the three points to put them back on track.
