The decisive goal came after 40 minutes when Junior Mendes collected a pass from David Pipe and turned smartly to fire a shot into the far corner.
Mendes then combined with Dan Gleeson to set up Jason Lee and the striker volleyed against a post.
That was a crucial let off and Jim Gannon delivered a short, sharp message to his players at half time, before sending them back out after only a five-minute break.
Gannon, who also made a double substitution at that stage by sending on Adam Proudlock and Adam Griffin, clearly wanted more from his players.
They might have equalised after 58 minutes when Kevin Pilkington misjudged a shot from Jason Taylor and was fortunate to see it rebound from the foot of a post.
And the goalkeeper also had to produce a smart save to keep out Proud-lock's header as Stockport hemmed Notts in the final stages of a lively match. Tweet
