SPORTY students can still take advantage of Stockport Countyés link-up with Myerscough College in the form of full-time courses based around football studies.

In a special blend of academic study and practice in football, young people (male and female) aged 16 and above will be offered the opportunity to study for either a one-year First Diploma in Sports Studies or a two-year National Diploma in Football Studies.

Modules will include the sports industry, health and safety, preparation for sports, leadership skills, psychology, nutrition, fitness, principles of coaching and sports injuries.

Work is assessed via assignments, presentations and reports.

Students will also be offered specialist coaching as part of the Football Development Programme, which will be linked to the youth set-up at the football club.

The programme will be based at the fantastic facilities at Woodley Sports FC, and will provide a great opportunity for talented players to receive expert coaching and for those with a keen interest in football to obtain a qualification related to the sport.

Myerscough College will manage the programme, but it will be delivered by staff and coaches from Stockport County, ensuring a strong link with the Edgeley Park club.

County manager Jim Gannon, a great believer in youth development, is very supportive of the venture.

He said: "This is an excellent initiative which will be of benefit to Stockport County and to young players in the region.

"The programme offers a great opportunity for budding young professional players and young people who wish to further develop their football education."

Countyés Centre of Excellence manager Mick Wiblin has been instrumental in setting up the programme, which he sees as a progression from the existing excellence and development set-up.

Some trials were held earlier this year, and there will be further trials held before Christmas.
