Stockport County

More Murray

COUNTYéS assistant boss Peter Ward has not ruled out a potential bid to bring loan striker Glenn Murray to Edgeley Park permanently.

Murray, who began a second month on loan from Carlisle United at the end of last week, took his scoring rate to three in six County games on Sunday thanks to a clinical brace in the 2-1 win over Bristol Rovers. The 22-year-old has been in splendid form since arriving at Edgeley Park on the eve of the current season, and ités perhaps unsurprising that Ward and Jim Gannon have been so impressed so far.

Ward said: "Glenn is someone we were chasing before last seasonés transfer deadline, but Carlisle wanted to keep hold of him as they were going for promotion.

"We spoke to [Carlisle boss] Neil McDonald in Ibiza in the summer, and he said that with them already having Karl Hawley, Kevin Gall and Derek Holmes, Glenn would be allowed to come to us on loan. His contract is up at the end of the season, but if things carry on going well and Glenn keeps scoring goals, then maybe weéll try and make the deal permanent.

"Nothing can happen until the transfer window in January of course, but if Glenn stayed until the end of a third monthés loan that would take us up to nearly November."

Carlisle can recall at Murray at just 24 hours notice should they wish, but the Cumbrian hit-man is enjoying his spell at County.

Ward added: "Glennés got a good feel for the place, he likes it here.

"Heés still got youth on his side too, heés a big lad, and I believe thereés still a lot more to come from him."

Meanwhile, Ward added that everyone around Edgeley Park has been given a big lift this week thanks to the first league win of the season against Bristol Rovers, and the squad will head off to Boston United on Saturday full of confidence.

Ward said: "Although Boston havenét had the best of starts, it will be a tough game for us on Saturday.

"They are a big, physical team, and we will have to match their effort, work rate and aggression.

"Our lads have been enjoying training again this week though, thereés been a really good tempo in the camp."

  • GLENN Murray and Ashley Williams have both been named in the Coca-Cola League Two Player of the Week squad.

Murray was selected alongside Bury striker Andy Bishop, while Williams, who has been in outstanding form all season, partnered Peterboroughés Guy Branston at the heart of the defence.
