Stockport County

Fred feels just grand

LIFELONG County fanatic Fred Benson [pictured] has the proud distinction of becoming the Hattersé 1,000th season ticket holder for the forthcoming 2006/07 campaign.

A Hatters supporter for more than 47 years, Fred had no hesitation in renewing his ticket and is looking forward to a full season under the stewardship of Jim Gannon.

He told stockportcounty.com: "Before Jim arrived the team had no direction, but heés settled them down and they are a lot more organised now.

"Jim was one of my favourite County players and ités great to see him doing so well as a manager.

"If we can repeat the form shown since he arrived over a full season then thereés no reason why we canét be pushing for the play-offs."

Apart from Gannon, Fred also named Brett Angell, Kevin Francis and Chris Marsden amongst his Hatters heroes.

And, not surprising to older fans, he also brought up the names of the dynamic striking duo of Jim Fryatt and Bill Atkins from the halcyon éGO GO GO Countyé era.

Ités a real family affair for the Bensons as Fredés seat in the Main Stand is directly behind his son Mark and grandson Lawrence, who is just four years of age and a proud member of the Mini Hatters.

Launched last season, Mini Hatters membership for under-sevens has soared past the 100 mark, and ités no wonder.

Ités free to join and, as part of the terrific package, each youngster also receives a free season ticket.

The Mini Hatters club is just one of a number of initiatives launched by County to attract families to Edgeley Park.

A section of the Pop Side will be reserved for families next season, and special season tickets means that an adult and two children can watch all Countyés League Two games for just é13 a match.
