Agar eyes County challenge

KEITH Agar is 100 per cent committed to Stockport County, and is now counting the days until he finally takes over in an official capacity at Edgeley Park and signs a contract.

Middlesbrough-raised Agar has been éhelping outé at County since Supporters Trust chiefs appointed him in a temporary consultant role four months ago.

However, he is now looking forward to becoming a permanent feature at the club following the departure of former chief executive Kevan Taylor last week.

Agar said: "Iém still in negotiations with the Trust at the moment.

"Weére trying to set up a formal agreement aimed at me coming in as chief executive or a director.

"It should all be sorted out within the next seven days though - we are very close."

Agar, who has more than 20 years of experience in football with Middlesbrough, Leeds United, Bradford City, Doncaster Rovers and Darlington - as well as running the commercial set-up at the Donington Park motor racing circuit - has quickly settled in Stockport and is relishing the prospect of helping move the Hattersé onwards and upwards.

He added: "Stockport County is a hell of a big club, theyéve got marvellous fans and they deserve to get back up the leagues.

"I have to say that Iéve fallen in love with the whole place. Stockport is my home, Iém in the office six days a week now and I know every shop in Edgeley.

"Ités been a case of trying to catch up a bit with whatés gone on in the past, but everyone behind the scenes is trying to move forward and the mood is extremely positive.

"Iéve also had a good relationship with the Sale Sharks people. Theyéve been nice people to work with since I arrived."

And Agar is convinced that in Jim Gannon, County have a top manager in place, a man who can lead the players to much better times in the future.

Agar said: "Weéve definitely got the right man at the helm in Jim Gannon.

"Heés working hard at attracting the right players to the club, and there will be developments very soon.

"We have been in discussions about players, along with acting chairman Norman Beverley, and weére all confident going into next season.

"We know ités not going to be easy, but we need to have a good season next time so I would ask the fans to get behind us now.

"Season ticket sales have been excellent, but I would urge more and more County fans to really get behind the club next season.

"We need to build on the momentum that was created towards the end of last season."
