Stockport County

Stockport 0 Bury 1

BURY leap frogged Stockport in the League 2 relegation scrap thanks to a 32nd minute goal by County old boy John Daly.

Stockport had some early chances and Keith Briggs had two shots blocked on the line by Tom Kennedy, the County midfielder claiming he was denied by a hand ball for the second time.

Aidan Collins came close with a glancing header from Damien Allen's free kick which was saved by Kasper Schmeichel.

But the Shakers fought back with Lewis Gobern striking a volley against the inside of the Stockport County post.

Bury took the lead in the 32nd minute after Ian Ross's shot was turned behind by Stockport Keeper James Spencer. Ross took the corner himself and Daly stole in to head powerfully past Spencer.

Lacklustre

It could have been two in a minute for the visitors but Tom Youngs' header hit the foot of the post.

A lacklustre second half was enlivened only by Allen's dipping shot saved by Schmeichel and Ross's free kick struck just wide of Spencer's right hand post.

Sub Matt Hamshaw came closest to an equaliser when he drove the ball across the face of the Bury goal in the 81st minute.

Dave Challinor's weak header back to Schmeichel almost let in sub Adam Le Fondre.

But Bury almost grabbed a second late on but Brian Barry-Murphy's free kick was knocked behind by a diving Spencer.

Typical that a donkey who never did anything for us would end up taking the points for the opposition today. Our inconsistency is baffling at times, and this was just a repeat of our performance against Boston. A week or two agao I would have thought our chances of staying up were very high, but other teams are starting to win each week (Chester, Rushden, Bury etc) and we are starting to struggle again. We need to find some consistent bite and fast. Difficult game against Cheltenham next, and we have to pull our finger out. Bury wanted this game more than we did today and that is not good enough.

I have to say that I saw this one coming or I feared it anyway. Two weeks without a game is a long time to maintain the focus that is needed to be game ready. Sure you can say that's what they're paid for but it won't alter the fact, they're only human and two weeks of training is not the same as the "real thing".
No good crying over spilt milk and all that, those three points are gone so on to the next game and actually I fancy them for a result next week.
Last word from me, who would have thought in December we would be disappointed at not winning 4 games on the bounce? We were praying for one win on the bounce in those days! Thanks Jimmy Gannon, come on the County!

Anyone who thought we were already out of trouble was deluding themselves. This performance was a toe curling embarrassment. With some difficult games ahead this could go right down to the wire!!

The best striker on display today was (our own) Jon Daly. How ironic is it that? This was a player that was slaughtered by his own ill educated supporters when he was at County. We have friends who support Bradford and they said that Wibraham and Bridge-Wilkinson were superb yesterday. Wilbraham another County player through and through driven out by moronic supporters. Why is Rob Clare out of the team and lesser players like Williams and Beharall in? It wasn't the fact that we lost yesterday that is bothering me. It was the fact that the team could turn in such a turgid performance with so much at stake. Even when we've won recently we have been fortunate. You cannot rely on good fortune and we will have to get better over the next few weeks if we are to survive.

It strikes me that we're a pretty poor side but we're bound to stay up with teams like Stockport around. They were without doubt the worst side I've seen this season and perhaps for the last ten seasons. Truly woeful. Sorry guys, I like to see the local sides stay up but with a team like that you've got no chance. It's cheerio I'm afraid.

Anyone else remember Matt from Bury posting after the game at Gigg Lane? I suspect our friend from a few weeks ago is back under an alias. Is that you, plantpot of Chorlton- Cum-Hardly but now from Gatley? I suppose he could have a twin in Bury, if so they might just have an IQ between them. For the record, County with Jimmy Gannon: WON 7 DRAWN 5 LOST 4. Played 16 games 26 Points. Over 46 games that would be a 75 point season! Those lucky so and sos, or maybe they have become a team, that instead of being terrified of the last 15 minutes and the inevitable goal (s) against, now believes it can score and win right up to the the final whistle. Result, some late winners instead of late losing goals. Who should get credit for that then? Oh no that's right, they're just lucky. Get real or get bent depending on which side of the fence you sit!

matt from bury: you are deluded!!! Were you at Gigg lane for our 3 points?
Centre backs like Challinor are just NOT good enough for this division. If we had got our tactics right on saturday we would have scored a few goals quite easily (ie inject a bit of pace in the form of Le Fondre-more offensive formation).

I too fancy us at Cheltenham. Yes, we are back in the mire-but we have much more passion than you ever will Bury!!!

Definately a set-back result for us. We really needed to win both games against Bury. Those kind of headers, at this level, can go anywhere. I think we'll pick points up versus Shrewsbury and Barnet but anything from Cheltenham would be useful - their last 5 home games are unbeaten but their last 5 overall is patchy - LWDWL and the two they beat were Rushden and Chester. Still think Jim has breathed hope into us. Keep the faith.

Jim rightly deserves lots of credit for what he has done since he took over, but he must take the blame for the defeat on saturday. Tactically the line up was a joke, very defensive with both Hamshaw and Ward on the bench, surely we should be brave enough to try to beat teams like Bury by attacking them. In my view if we had started with Hamshaw we would have won, by the time he came on things were beyond recovery even though he did come closest to scoring.
JG clearly has a problem with MH, and not picking him isn't doing our survival chances any good.

I have to take exception to jenny's comments Alby was not driven out and would be welcomed back by most of us, Daly though will never make a footballer, he has a goal ratio of about 1 in 18 and if Raynes or Clare had played at weekend he would not have been half as effective.

.Must admit to being slightly baffled by Jim's team selection against Bury.
Unless both were carrying injuries, Hamshaw and/or Ward should have been in from the start.
However, its easy to judge after the event,...yes, we are still in trouble but i still believe that we have the character to get ourselves out of it

Totally agree with pretty much everything that has been said in all threads about yesterday's game. That was my first game for 4 months cos I've been in France for me gap year, and I can honestly say that worse than anything we saw under Turner. I did come back to England buoyed by the way Jim seems to have turned it round but after that I almost wish I'd stayed in France till the end of the season.Somebody please tell me we have been playing well and that this was just a blip!!!
From what I managed to gather abroad Jim isn't afraid to chop and change the team and make bold decisions like make 1 or 2 changes as early as half time. However his selection puzzled me yesterday-leaving Hamshaw out, playing Tes Bramble on the right wing(I wouldn't play him at all but that's another issue), centre half Beharall And then not starting with Alfie against the lumps Challinor and Woodthorpe who, to be fair had good games. Finally, where was the kid Ward from Villa who's been getting rave reviews? Why bring Michael Raynes on for the last 10 minutes instead of him?Incidentally Bambi should have started instead of that clown Collins, who can't be much good cos Joe Royle normally gives the decent youngsters at Ipswich a chance, especially this season after their squad got torn up in the summer.
Have we got too many loan players? Most of them surely realise they won't be here next season so shouldn't we be playing players who do actually give a tuss? This was in stark contrast to the Bury loan players, all of whom had excellent games, particularly Lewis Gobern who was mu man of the match.Ian Ross has impressed me before playing for Boston, Kasper Schmeichel while not being as tall as his dad looks every bit as assured and Jon Daly scored the all important goal(he's still useless though)

I know i've only seen one game but what i've heard in the past 4 months can't be false illusions and our fate still lies in our own hands. COME ON COUNTY!

Mmm..interesting comments from Browny in Canada. Oh sorry, where's that....Canada. To read your posts it would appear that you watch all the games when in fact you haven't got a clue. Anyone who was there on Saturday following County or Bury would have to admit that County were useless.....and I mean useless. So get back to your Ice Hockey or Mountie spotting or whatever it is that you guys do and don't pass comment on things that you cannot know anything about!!!

I suggest you worry about your own team Matt from Bury!! Its still very tight in there and you have as much chance of dropping as us! Okay we had a poor game but how you can mah=ke any judgements on two games is beyond me. Your a tin pot team who will most probably be rentiong the ground from FC United soon. Your supporters are a disgrace!! With such small and poor support like yours, adding the fact that you have the worst centre back pairing english football has ever seen it wont be long before your enjoying derbies with Altrincham. All County fans keep the faith! We cant win every game! Remember this team was relegated at Xmas, we now have a fighting chance. Its not performances at this stage just grinding out results! Come on the County boys, lets get behind Jim and the team!!!!!!!!

Just to jump in on the contributions by Matt and responses by many others. I didn't see the game against Bury but I did see the Torquay manager (Cornforth) on the local TV down here in an interview just before the postponed match a week last Saturday. He acknowledged that County were the best team that they (Torquay) had played this season and were very lucky to come away from EP at end January with a point. County might have been poor against Bury but they must have done better in many other games since JG took over otherwise they would still occupy bottom spot.

I notice that apart from the 'Bury Fan' who has posted notes here, there are no comments on Bury's page, says it all really, with the passion County fans have for their club, we should be in the Premiership

Matt, Matt, Matt, you really are a plonker aren't you. Is that the best you can come up with, you're in Canada so you can't know owt about football? Have you ever flown 11,000 miles round trip for an Auto Glass Trophy final? Pillock, I've been proud to be a County fan AND a proper football fan for over 40 years and obviously have forgotten more about football than you'll ever cram into that tiny brain of yours. I never comment on how well or otherwise teams play because all I do see is "highlights",detailed match reports and emails from mates who were at the matches. (Yes that's right Gloria. it's 2006 and such things are common now, dearie). As for sport in Canada allow me to educate you. Ice hockey and lacrosse are the joint national sports, they have a much more entertaining version of the NFL which is known as Canadian football, a very strong rugby tradition, baseball, basketball, etc. and the sport most participated in is soccer, you know FOOTBALL.
One more thing pea brain, as a proper football fan I NEVER go onto Bury's site or any other team's to post anything other than friendly messages of moral support (eg. check Macc's site) because I'm not a muppet like you. Now just beetle off sonny before I stop being so nice.
