Stockport County

Going up the table

EXPRESS Player of the Month for February James Spencer believes County's move up the League Two table is the confidence boost they need ahead of the end-of-season run-in.

Adam Le Fondre's late winner against Oxford shifted County from 22nd to 17th in the table, a victory which could set the Hatters up nicely for the end of the season.

County's number one Spencer said: "To move up five spots in the table was a massive, massive thing for us.

"The result will hopefully give all the lads a big psychological boost over the next three or four games, and therefore enable us to move even further up the table.

"Grinding out the victory over one of our main rivals just shows that we've got a bit more character in the side thesedays. That has been a major factor in us being able to turn things around.

"We're not safe yet of course, but if we keep plugging away and picking up these kind of results then we'll be okay well before the final game of the season."

The choice of Spencer for February's top man was a popular one judging by the reception he received when picking up the award before the game on Saturday.

"It's been great to get a run in the team," added Spencer. "I think it's been about 25 games or so now, and I've been pleased with my consistency.

"If I can keep that up then hopefully I can stay in the team until the end of the season.

"I made a couple of important saves on Saturday, but again we defended well as a unit. The defence has really tightened up since Jim Gannon came in."

Of course with Spencer performing so well between the sticks of late, he is bound to be attracting interest from clubs higher up the pyramid, as he has done before from the likes of West Brom and Sunderland.

Spencer said: "I know there's been one or two scouts down to take a look at me, but I haven't spoken to anyone about a move anywhere.

"My contract is up at the end of this season, but I am hoping that I will be offered a new one by County.

"If that is the case then we'll have to see what they come up with, but for now I'd like to leave that in the club's hands."
