Stockport County

County go for Gannon

COUNTY have installed Jim Gannon as caretaker manager following the departure of Chris Turner, and the former Edgeley Park legend was set to take charge of team affairs at last night’s [Wed] crunch home game against Torquay United.

Gannon will be assisted by youth team coach Craig Madden.

In a glorious ten-year career with the Hatters, Gannon helped County to two promotions and four Wembley finals.

Only Andy Thorpe and Bobby Murray have made more senior appearances than Gannon’s 478.

With 64 County goals to his name, he is also ninth in the club’s all-time goalscoring charts.

Ahead of last night’s game, Gannon told County TV: "My first aim is to lift the spirits of the players.

"We need a couple of results quickly because its very important that County don’t go further adrift."

Chris Turner, and his assistant Colin West, left Edgeley Park by mutual consent on Tuesday after a disastrous year in charge which culminated in the embarrassing 6-0 thumping at local rivals and fellow League Two strugglers Macclesfield Town on Boxing Day.

Shattered County players must try and pick up the pieces for three more crucial holiday games at home to second-bottom Torquay, at Bury on Saturday, and then at home to Cheltenham on Monday.

I wish Jim Gannon all the very best of luck. He'll certainly need it. I'm sure he remembers how County turned their disastrous start in the league in 1996 into an unforgettable finish. Do it again, Jim, off the pitch this time. I'm sure you can.

After the chaos that has become associated with County over the years, since the halcion days of Danny Begara, it is good to see a stalwart such as Jim Gannon take charge - albeit temporarily. He is a County man through and through with an astute football brain and knowledge of what it is like in the lower echelons of the Football League. I have met him on a number of occasions when County used to play in the Isle of Man festival. He will work hard to ensure th club moves forward. However, he will need luck and some work in the transfer market to ensure some much needed experience is added to this youthful but promising group that exists already at Edgeley Park. I am a fan from afar now but many happy years were spent on a Friday night watching Tommy Sword, Steve Sherlock, Osher Williams, Andy Kilner and the not to be forgotten Alun Armstrong and Kevin Francis - Ah - those were the days. Come on you Hatters, rise like a Phoenix and return. The days of re-election that once seemed so long ago could still end up with non-league and that for County would be unthinkable.
