Stockport County

County making news in Scandinavia

DESPITE the heartache of conceding a stoppage-time equaliser at Shrewsbury last Saturday, the massive, travelling Blue and White Army were in magnificent form at Gay Meadow, earning rave reviews from Shrews’ supporters and Danish TV.

No, it’s not a mistake, a crew representing Denmark’s Channel 5 descended on Edgeley Park last Thursday as part of a special project on Stockport County following the takeover by the Supporters’ Trust in July.

The two Danes filmed the players and interviewed Chris Turner at the Manor Farm training ground on Friday before travelling to Shropshire on one of the fleet of supporters’ coaches where they were, literally, amazed by the voiciferous County fans who took over local pubs for a good-natured sing-song and then provided Turner’s side with magnificent support from two sides of Gay Meadow.

Journalist Lars Mathiasen, speaking after collecting old County footage from Edgeley Park on Sunday morning, said: “The atmosphere in the away end was just fantastic and the singing in the pubs before the game was unbelievable. We got some great pictures.”

The Shrewsbury fans were equally glowing on their fans’ message board as well.

“Their fans were fantastic, singing in the Crown in Abbey Foregate before the game and good atmosphere from them during the game.

“I wish them all the best for the rest of the season (until they play us again),” said one.

Another added: “I got into the Crown at 1.30pm and their fans never stopped singing until 2.50.

“They were a good friendly bunch. The funniest thing was our lot on the Riverside singing ‘you only know one song’.

“They must have sung at least 25 different ones in the Crown and most of them were hysterical!”
