FRESH from a near hour-long roasting from manager Chris Turner immediately after last Saturday’s defeat, County’s players have since responded well in training and are as determined as ever ahead of this weekend’s home clash against Chester.
Turner gave his players a piece of his mind after John Dempster’s soft 92nd minute goal won Saturday’s game for Rushden after County had twice led thanks to a Phil Gulliver own goal and a second in two games for Michael Malcolm.
Turner said: “I wasn’t particularly upset about the result, I was just so disappointed because our performance throughout the match warranted the three points.
“We had more shots, we created more chances than Rushden, but we must tighten up at the back.
“They should call us ‘the entertainers’. We’re scoring lots of goals, that’s 15 in nine games now, but we must learn to close games down.
“We are a bit flamboyant going forward and we do need to still go out there and entertain, and to be fair I’ve had a very good response on the training ground this week.
“I still have every confidence in my players and I’m confident going into the Chester game, it’s just a few little things that we must concentrate more on. We need to start winning at home [County have drawn all four of their previous home games so far this season] and then get back on a bit of a run.
“As long as we keep scoring we’ll move back up the table.”
County will be missing midfielder Mickael Wolski again this weekend, he has been ruled out for three to four weeks thanks to an infection in his calf which has swelled up to the size of a golf ball since being bitten at the Manor Farm training ground.
“That will give Keith Briggs another chance to stake a claim in his preferred midfield role on Saturday,” added Turner.
“I’m 99 per cent certain that the starting line-up will remain unchanged for the Chester game.”
Meanwhile, centre-back Michael Raynes is now back in full-time training and will get a run-out with the youth team on Saturday morning.
Hopefully he should be back in contention for a first-team recall for the trip to Wrexham a week on Saturday. The same applies to thigh injury victim Jermaine Easter.
