Stockport County

Fulham fans back the Hatters

FELLOW fans from as far afield as Spain and London have been getting behind the Stockport County Supporters Trust in the run-up to their successful takeover of the football club last Friday.

The mighty Barcelona football club - the largest supporter-owned outfit in the world - have taken a keen interest in the Stockport County story of late, while Fulham fans have been backing the League Two Hatters by purchasing £50 bonds since the launch of that scheme in May.

Trust board member Neil Chapman said: “One of our younger members went onto the internet and sent out the message about our bond scheme to clubs from all over the UK, clubs at all different levels of the pyramid.

“And would you believe we’ve had a great response, especially from Fulham fans.

“People who are 200 miles away who have no association whatsoever with Stockport, other than the fact they see it as the right thing to do as football supporters, have pledged money and they have purchased more than 10 bonds already.

“It’s still very early days, but also there’s definitely a growing link between Barcelona fans and media and Stockport too, we hope to develop that in the near future.”

Chapman was later delighted to reveal that the ‘rainy day’ fund requirement had now been met, Trust membership now stands at in excess of 1,000, and almost 2,000 County season tickets have been sold in readiness for the new League Two campaign which gets under way on August 6.

He added: “Despite the takeover now going through, we still need people to commit themselves to Stockport County, we’ve still got to sell bonds, that’s absolutely critical.

“But the amount of season tickets already sold has shown a superb commitment already from County fans.

“I believe that figure will rise though, a lot of people I’ve spoken to seemed to be waiting to see if the Trust deal would be done.

“Hopefully the figure can now rise way above the 2,000 mark.

“Everything seems to be going right at the moment, who could have asked for a better start to the new season than to be playing Carlton Palmer’s Mansfield at home on the first day, and then for Sheffield Wednesday to be coming over in the Carling Cup.

“Everything is conspiring for this to be a successful season for Stockport County.”
