Turner clears County decks

CHRIS Turner has put four Stockport County players on the transfer list and told six others who are out of contract that they can leave Edgeley Park.

Jim Goodwin, who had been captain under Turner, heads those players whose contracts will not be renewed, along with veteran striker Stuart Barlow, winger Lee Cartwright and defender John Hardiker.

Goodwin played more than 100 times for County and won a cap for the Republic of Ireland while with the club.

Keeper Neil Cutler, striker Chris Williams and defenders Danny Jackman and Danny Griffin have all been transfer-listed.

Strikers Marvin Robinson and Chris Armstrong, who were brought in on short-term contracts by Turner, have also not been offered new terms.

Turner, who needs to get rid of the bigger earners at the club to start rebuilding his squad for life in League Two, said: "It's always the worst day of the year when you have to tell players their services will not be retained.

"I'd like to go on record by thanking all of them for their professionalism and commitment since I took over as manager at County.

"And I'd especially like to thank Jim Goodwin, who has been a tremendous captain for us.

"The budget dictates who we can or can't sign, and I hope that something can be resolved by the time I return from holiday next week."

Well done Chris Turner, other than Hardiker and Barlow, I'm not sorry to see any of them go. Keep up the good work.

"Goodwin has been a tremendous captain" I don't think so - he has been a total liability in terms of consistency and discipline. Why he ever attained the captaincy is beyond me. Lets face it, all those players who failed this club - and that is 90% of those who played in the last 2 years and are still on the books, should go.
How depressing, on the last weekend of the season we see Luke Beckett save Oldham and the two clubs we have traditionally looked down on - Crewe and Macclesfield perform to a degree which leaves us standing. I am embarrassed to support this club having first watched County in 1950. This season (and last) has been a disgrace to those who have supported the club over the years and I just hope that the Trust can start to get things going again but I dont, at present see how!

I think chris turner is correct in not offering contracts to these players. However if the club's ownership isn't sorted quickly, all chris turner will have left to sign will be the players no one else wants!! I still don't think we will have any substantial amounts of money to attract enough quality players. There must be someone out there willing to invest large amounts of money in the club, I'm still not convinced the trust is the way forward. We will have consistent seasons in Div 4 as perennial relegation fighters. Maybe we're going 70's retro only difference being we could be non league very soon...Uncle Brendan where are you?

I think CT is right to release the six player, Hardiker is only liked by the fans because of the two goals against that Blue team in Manchester. Goodwin is a bit rash (hence missing the last game this season and the first two next!) Barlow - great guy but too old. Free transfers to Culter and Jackman, both I expect high earners, they won't be missed. As for Armstrong - he made Micky Quinn look like Linford Christie! I'm not sure who's going to come in but I did see that Rob Clare has been released by Blackpool!

Echoing some earlier remarks, other than Hardiker & Barlow I am not to sorry to see any of these players leave. Jackman & Griffin were maybe the only other players I partially rate but their bad performances well outweigh the good. Barlow has been a solid proffessional & great 'supersub' but he has just become a victim of age. All in all with this being the worst County side since I can remember we can surely only beome better than this - & Goodwin a tremendous captain? I can count his good matches barely on two hands, & his lothargic attitude in many games - atypical of many other County players this season - is one of the reasons we've been a disaster!

I have been watching County since 1963 and until this season the worst was 1969/70 when I think we got only 27 points. However, since it was two points for a win then it means that this side is by far the worst I have ever seen at EP. Talentless and gutless. CT's list of rejects is about right altho' I would struggle to make much of a case for anyone staying, apart from James Spencer.

Can't put an arguement forward as to why any of these players should have been kept, but the biggest mystery to me is how Robertson has been retained, he would have been the first one out of the door if it had been up to me, talk about injury prone, we aren't in a position where we can carry any passengers, & one game in every six is no good for a team with such a small squad.
