Stockport County

Stockport 2 Newport 2

A late equaliser from substitute Jake Harris left Stockport County manager Jim Gannon ruing missed chances as they drew 2-2 in the Blue Square Premier against ten-man Newport County on Saturday.

After looking comfortable at 2-1 following Newport’s Andy Sandell’s dismissal, Gannon admitted errors cost his side.

“You could say it’s two points lost, we’re all disappointed after being 2-1 up with the opposition down to 10 men,” he said.

“There will be a few of our lads who will be disappointed in that they didn’t make those one or two opportunities count.

“But by and large I think they’ll just be disappointed that the opposition haven’t had to work too hard for that last goal that has salvaged them a point.”

Following a win against Kidderminster in their last game, County were looking for back-to-back wins for the first time since February 2009 and they got off to the perfect start after just six minutes.

A free-kick from Euan Holden was headed on by Tom Elliot into the path of Danny Rowe who outmuscled his marker before calmly slotting past Glyn Thompson.

The Hatters, buoyed by the early goal had a chance to add to their tally when a brilliant through ball from Halls found its way to Sean McConville but with the option to shoot or cross, the midfielder did neither with the ball rolling harmlessly past the far post.

The visitors’ best chance came moments later as Ian Ormson was forced to dive full stretch to prevent Ryan Charles from grabbing an equaliser for the Exiles.

But it was Elliot who was left wondering what might have been at the break as he missed a glorious chance on 37 minutes.

Bringing down Paul Turnbull’s pass with a sublime touch, the frontman rounded Thompson and looked destined to put the ball in the back of the net but Exiles skipper Gary Warren threw himself in the way, blocking a certain goal.

A brilliant first-half start was contrasted by the worst possible beginning to the second period as Sandell found space to fire home the leveller on 50 minutes.

But it was a case of hero turned villain as the full back was sent off ten minutes later for stray arm to the face of McConville in what appeared to be a harsh decision.

Rowe then smashed home a free kick low to the keeper’s left on 59 minutes to give County the advantage after he was pulled back on the edge of the area.

The 24-year-old was a whisker away from completing his hat-trick 15 minutes later when he crashed a 25-yard shot against the bar with the whole Cheadle End willing it in.

A string of chances followed for County with efforts from Elliot, denied expertly by Thompson, and substitute Danny M Rowe firing wide.

But the Hatters were made to pay for missed opportunities as Harris poked in at the far post with the full time whistle approaching after a poor clearance in the County area.

Another step nearer the drop ,draws at home in this Mickey Mouse league just not good enough ,and the band plays on like it did on the Titanic

Another home draw, and below average perfomance.

It is a good job Newport only had 10 players on the pitch for most of the game.

Others will claim we are on an unbeaten roll - TUT!!.

Really disappointing result especially after beating Kiddy in previous home match. To avoid yet another relegation County should be taking all the points from home fixtures against any club in the bottom half. Hope at the end of season that we are not left to 'rue' the two points lost in this fixture. Not a good result especially with difficult fixtures looming.

Should really have wrapped this up, a goal in front and playing against 10 men for half an hour, but let's face it, Newport are fighting to survive the drop, so it wasn't an easy game.
There is a slow but sure improvement in results, so I have every faith in Jim to keep us safe.

Well I think Stockport played very well and it was an exciting game
to watch, end to end stuff! All credit must go to Newport, even down
to 10 men they continued to play good football and attack.
It was a case of missed chances for Stockport but they still got
a point,it could have been worse.More wins are needed though,
especially at home.

Shame to let in the late equaliser but we all knew it wouldnèt suddenly go smoothly did we not? Fact is we were in a position to win and did not, when we were 2 down and came back for a point, it felt better but the result was the same. Now a defeat would have been serious, but still not fatal. We will not go down and it will be partly due to scrappy points like this. Two tough matches coming up and I will personally be disappointed with no points, not long ago I would have been resigned to a couple of pastings.
Keep The Faith :)
Who needs Mourinho when we've got Jimbo?
