Gannon: County need to kick on after crucial win

Stockport County manager Jim Gannon believes there is more to come from his side following a hard-fought victory in Saturday’s Blue Square Premier clash with Kidderminster.

A powerful second half strike from Danny Rowe secured a crucial three points for the Hatters after Sean McConville had put his side ahead after 21 minutes. But County allowed Harriers straight back into the game from the kick-off as Nick Wright’s deflected shot found its way past a stranded Ian Ormson leaving Gannon demanding more from his players.

"I’m not a perfectionist but I think there’s still room for improvement," he said.

The Hatters boss was full of praise for match-winner Rowe after his second goal in three games. "It was a fantastic goal," said Gannon. "He’s got fantastic ability and I think he’s getting fitter and even without the goal I thought he was man of the match."

Rowe, who was able to celebrate his birthday on Sunday with the man-of-the-match champagne, commended his team’s performance.

"It was good, we had to dig in towards the end but got two good goals and we did it. It’s a big three points," said the 23-year-old.

County are now in a two-week break until their next game at home to Newport on February 11 but Gannon insists it is important his side don’t rest on their laurels.

"We want to come out of these two weeks now firing on all cylinders," said Gannon.

"We’ve got some tough games which are critical to our survival."

Jim not a perfectionist!! I beg to differ, quite rightly he is expecting more and now getting a response. Someway to go but so far so good. Those that cant step up to the plate are going through the door. He hasnt got lots of money to work with but I still believe if it was not for Jim we would have sunk already, now we have a fighting chance to stay above the drop zone and to build for a better season in August.

Good crowd on Saturday, keep communicating with the fans, tell us whats happening and more importantly why, keep improving and you will get bums on seats, stop doing that and the lights will go out. Come on County the only way is up

Spot on Paul,I agree totally and the players that are left must know that Jim means business, if you're not good enough, it's bye bye.
What a difference a win makes as well, I enjoyed my weekend for a change and with United getting beaten, it should keep the village idiot quiet for a week, out of all 3 cup competitions eh ? only Mickey Mouse cups anyway.

A much better performance by my team. But Gannon said the same after the victory we had prior to this one, and look how long it took to get the next win.

Doesnt every body use this forum to share thier own perosnal views/opinions? I do. I have been both negative and positive about the club and players but do feel Jim is not only doing the right things but saying the right things and instilling some belief in the current crop by talking them up. Without him this season we would have already gone and probably the club withit. Even if we are inconsitent but stay above the drop zone this season that has to be applauded and its the start of stopping the freefall. Under Didi we were crap, brought in crap and played sideways football in our own half, now we are improving without money, getting rid of dross and playing with purpose-all better signs than a few moths ago. ( thats my opinion)

A signficant win this one. I sneered somewhat as I read Jim Gannon's match programme notes about County having the ability to beat any team in this division: "Prove it" I thought. And then County proceeded to do just that. We all know the mental aspect of Football is probably more important than physical skill and there was something going on during this game that I can't quite define but felt right. We've seen commitment from County teams at times during the past 3 seasons but there was more during this game - a quiet belief. Although Kidderminster (who looked a good team to me) started well, County slowly seemed to take control without being spectacular. This result sends an important message - County do not have to rely on good results against others around them (probably just as well). I don't expect miracles but we should steer clear of the bottom four, largely based on achieving more "surprise" results against higher teams - something I can't see the likes of Bath, Kettering doing.
