Stockport boss Jim Gannon was left to rue missed chances as the Hatters wasted an opportunity to put clear daylight between themselves and the Blue Square Bet Premier drop-zone in crashing 2-0 at Gateshead.
Two goals in three minutes just after the hour condemned County to a defeat which leaves them still perched precariously above the four relegation places.
Ex-Rochdale striker Jon Shaw broke the deadlock from the penalty-spot after being pulled back by Andy Halls before setting up Paul Moore for the Geordies’ killer second.
But Stockport, who have now gone 147 games without recording back-to-back wins, should have been in front before then, with both Carl Piergianni and Sam Sheridan spurning decent openings and Martin Gritton having a header ruled out for offside.
Gannon said: “We had some great chances and for 15 minutes of the second half Gateshead were edgy and it looked like we could get at them.
“The opening goal came when we were on top and changed the game. That’s often how it goes when you’re struggling but we have to keep going .”
Missed chances leave Stockport County too close for comfort

" we have to keep going" says Jim. wow thats optimism for you. Keep going --- where to is what I would like answered.Dont think this season will get much better now and we will hover above the drop and dross around us and including us. I have to stop going soon as I am tormented on what we were to what we have now become and the silence from the board as to what comes next. So another fan down until you say something/anything that spells out the future, how many more thirteen pound losses a game before the board answer
going down, going down, going down!! Dave i thought city were meant to be knocking us out the FA cup this weekend???
... and now a brave defeat away to Luton. I do feel for Jim - he is clearly having an impact but I'm beginning to understand it isn't going to be enough. People will point to the easier games against sides around us that are coming up, but the Alfreton result serves to show us that we mess up even those opportunities come around. The horrible truth is that a third consecutive relegation is utterly unacceptable, way beyond what any fan should have to tolerate. It is right, therefore, that this club folds should (or rather when) we get relegated. Whether we start again in the bottom tier as others have or join forces with Woodley Sports (which I still believe is a clear plan in some people's eyes) remains to be seen. There is a passionate piece by a Darlington fan doing the rounds on message boards currently. It was written before their recent Barrow game (possibly the last game the team will play) that shows the great love for their team. I can truly believe that Stockport fans at the moment couldn't really identify with that article. As fans we have been through too much in too little time and, if we're honest, we regard the death of County as a blessed relief.
Mullet Vision, you are quite right in saying we should keep the faith but, to be honest, it's more than difficult with next to no communication from those in charge at County (again). At least Darlo did survive another week. Although I find it interesting that the table on the County web-site shows just three (not four) teams shaded in the relegation zone - do they know something we don't?). Despite the greed of the Premiership, teams that are well run DO survive and the hard fact is, it's idiots like Kennedy (who at least has the excuse of not having to care about County) and the Gibbons (who have no excuse for thinking their lack of experience and so incompetance could somehow save the Club that they purport to love) that have done for this club. I accept things are better under Jim but it's time to deliver: Basically, get three points away to Braintree and then I (and hundreds of others) might think about turning out against Telford.
