Stockport County

Barrow 1 Stockport 0

Sickly Stockport will enter the New Year heading squarely for a third successive relegation after concluding 2011 with yet another defeat.

But the hapless Hatters may find some small grounds for optimism in their 1-0 loss at Barrow after restricting their mid-table Cumbrian hosts to just three shots on target.

For their part, County tested Barrow’s former Radcliffe keeper Danny Hurst on at least four occasions, with Ryan Fraughan, Sam Sheridan and sub Danny Rowe all going close.

But it was Barrow who snatched the all-important goal three minutes before the break when Phil Bolland headed in Richie Baker’s corner from the left.

With drop-zone foes Alfreton putting five past Tamworth, defeat sees Stockport, who have not won since mid-October, slip to next-to-bottom of Blue Square Bet Premier.

But, tantalisingly, Jim Gannon’s ailing side remain just two points short of safety as they struggle to avoid slipping straight through non-League football’s top-flight.

They might just have had 3 shots on target, but they still
won 1-0.We failed to score. That means 0 points,2nd from bottom.
I can`t see much ground for optimism.

Don't know about Santas on his way,but I think were going down again, will we break any records for the most religations by one club in consecutive seasons???

He (JG)has got rid of 3 big earners from the club, Chadwick, German, and Halstead lets see it we have some new faces next week,I think the next 2 weeks will shape the clubs future for the rest of the season.
But the board room needs a clean up as well we don't need lots of shareholders that to be honnest don't turn up for games ,all having a bit of the cake, lets trim it all down, right down to the stewards, for some of the teams we are playing this season we could easy put them in the far corner of the mainstand, rather than open up the railway end.
but like Santa said we need to learn to SHOOT!!!and not just ourselves in the foot .

Hi Dave - Gee Cross, if I am not mistaken I think Northampton have that distinction, didnt they drop from 1st division to 4th division in football league? In 60's? Anyhow that was in the league set up, County might not be included as they have gone out of league and am not familiar with non-league stats.
This is about the same time of the season when JG took over previously when we were in dire straights, slightly better position this time as we are not way adrift at the bottom. He has been dealt a bad hand but am sure he will have some ideas for the transfer window - maybe call in some favours from other managers.
On another issue, anyone know of Liam Dickinson's current whereabouts, is he getting regular games? - if not, am sure he would come back for a month or two - might get some much needed goals!!!!

Dave, if he's playing and scoring regularly for Southend then for sure he won't be available to County, was just a thought.

Classic scenario for, "Do you want the good news or the bad news?"
Good news: we had about a dozen shots instead of two :-), bad news of course is none of them went in :-(.
Good news: as pointed out by others, we are not trailing the division by a fistful of points,
bad news is close only counts with horseshoes (the game) and hand grenades!
Good news: we are again a hard team to beat (due mainly to the return of Glennon IMO), bad news is of course that we have been tantalisingly unable to win a game or two for too long now.
On a related note, season long we have only lost 3 times by more than a single goal so we are not that far away, but the bad news is that you don't get bonus points for close defeats or draws you had chances to win.
Good news: the window is there to sign some players to get us "over the hump" and picking up points on a regular basis, bad news is that Jim has to try and do it with no money to spend. I have a sneaking suspicion that Sean Mc could be dangled as bait for a possible swap deal to bring a couple of useful players in, IF that deal's there. Otherwise we may just have to sell him and free up a bit of cash and room on the wage bill that way, BUT Jim will not give Sean Mc away in the manner of the admin philanthropists. He will get value for him or not deal, I have no doubt of that fact.
Got to finish with a bit of optimism and that is, that as bad as we think we are, if we can only find a goal every other game without shipping a bunch at the other end then we will be safely in midtable long before the end of the season.
Is that impossible? I don't think so. We don't have to be Barcelona to climb this league, just a little better than we are right now. Jim Gannon knows what we need, I just hope to hell he can get it for us.
Jimmy Gannon's blue and white army :-)
All the best to you all for 2012 !

I think a third successive relegation is now almost inevitable - and that will be despite the heroic efforts of Jim Gannon. Expect (at best) a 0-0 draw at home to Barrow on New Years Day. Which is simply not enough. Whether we go down or not, if Sale Sharks are moving out of EP, we are dead. Was I mistaken, or did I hear that Woodley Sports were changing their name to Stockport FC? If so, this smacks of a plot to ensure County and Woodley combining forces in the Evo Stick "whatever" league. Possibly a good move given it's the the only option available.
