Stockport County

Gannon makes his point for Stockport

Relegation-haunted Stockport gave manager Jim Gannon a welcome wedding present in handing him his first point since his return to the Edgeley Park hot-seat.

But the relieved Hatters boss was forced to admit County had been lucky to end a five-match losing streak – 24 hours before he tied the knot with long-term partner Hazel – after being saved by the woodwork on three occasions in a 0-0 draw with fellow basement battlers Alfreton.

To be fair to County, they also came close  when Sean McConville’s drive was tipped onto a post in the second half.

But it was the visitors who left cursing their misfortune as Stockport escaped with a draw which leaves them still perched above Alfreton in the Blue Square Bet Premier drop-zone.

Gannon said: "I don't know that we would have kept a clean sheet against many other teams in this division defending like that.

"Having said that, I still feel we have players with the heart and ability to turn this around.”

Gannon was also cheered by the debut of new recruit Joe Connor, who produced a man-of-the-match performance as a holding midfielder.

The Stockport chief added: "For a virtual trialist off the street to show a higher level of fitness than most of his team-mates, as he did, says it all."

Really, really lucky to scramble a point. Mr Gannon if you ready this at all, please bring back James Wallace and Matt Paterson in January. Determination and a big heart is what is missing, these two would give EP such a lift. Thank You.

Best wishes Jim and I'm sure congrats for that first win are just around the corner too. As for the game, while hitting the woodwork is a good effort, the fact is the woodwork is not the target so it follows that's a miss in anybody's language. Unlucky, sure but still off target and a miss. Speaking of the target, County only had a couple on target themselves and while the good news is that the point gained did actually close the gap on teams above us, the bad news is that you won't draw many games with 2 shots on goal, you won't score many goals and you certainly won't win very often, if at all. So, while clean sheets are welcome and half the job done, we desperately need to generate chances and shots on goal if we are going to climb the league table. Jim pointed out the first time around managing at EP that i win + i defeat gets you more points than being undefeated with 2 draws, and it is as true now as it was then. Would be nice to pick up a player like Dicko when he first signed for County, you would never have mistaken him for a footballing thoroughbred but he had a great knack for scoring crucial goals. Eventually was a key player, and a much stronger well rounded striker, in the promotion season but those goals when he was an unpolished handful of a player from Woodley Sports were as crucial in themselves for the team that dragged itself back from the brink of relegation.
Come on Jimbo, find us another Dicko mate :-)

Not letting many in now ( all be it against bad sides) but nothing going in at the other end which is costing us. Hope is ebbing away as we still look a terrible outfit and relegation material nailed on at this moment. Cant get past thinking that with no money we are not going to improve any, we cant keep saying its fitness either, more over we have no talent and no commitment. Said it before and I say it again somebody do something before the crowd gets lower and lower and time catches us out. January sales are around the corner will we be buying anything? if not lets get some local lads who would give it thier all. Good luck Jim I know you will turn it around but everybody is questioning when? lets have some news on that, whats the plans??? whats going on of the field?? people are voting with thier feet now, the players cant even use thiers!!!!!!

Yes, we got 1 point, wow! This was a must win game against a team
who actually had less points than us.In less there is some change
in the new year then relegation looks likely.

As pointed out, we were very lucky not to ship 4 or 5 goals. I couldn't believe the ease with which Alfreton made short passes to each other, even in our penalty area. Alfreton looked good in the first half - as so often these days I'm not sure whether were good or we made them look good - but, fair play to Jim, he changed the formation in the second half and they posed much less of a threat. Plusses for me were some good runs by Edwards in the first half and the sharpness of Darwah when he came on. Also Elliot shows great strength to hold the ball up and flick on headers - he just needs to look up and around him as he steams forward having held on to possession. Jim has got the team playing with commitment but they still look too nervous and (like the sour cream that accompanies the otherwise excellent nacho + chillis served at the Cheadle End) lacking in substance. Lucky draws like this are a vital stepping stone however. There are more than enough poor teams around us such that, even if it's February before we put a modest run of wins and draws together, we can move comfortably clear of the bottom four.

A few years ago, County played in China and made quite a few friends over there. What's the possibility of rekindling the friendship and maybe getting an investor to come over and take a look, you never know, the Chinese seem to be taking over the world, they're having a good try over here in Spain, so they may think it's time to have a try with a football club ?
On a light hearted note, we could sign 2 of their best players in the January window.they're called We Wun Wonse and How Lon Sinse
