Jim Gannon sets out Stockport County mission

Jim Gannon has admitted he will be forced to slash the wage bill at Stockport County after he was unveiled as the new manager and director of football at Edgeley Park.

Gannon was handed the dual role after Dietmar Hamann resigned as manager last week. And after meeting players and staff for the first time, Gannon, whose first spell in charge ended two years ago, warned that cost-cutting was inevitable.

It will again throw Sean McConville's future into doubt, with County due to pay Accrington the first instalment of a five-figure tribunal fee this week.

“The club have asked me to be both the director of football and football manager,” said Gannon, who will assisted by Hamann's former No 2 Willie McStay.

“I think the fans mainly want to see me as a football manager but the most important thing is that the club structure is right, stability is brought back to the club, and a platform is created that gives any football manager or any football team the chance for success.

“There is a difficult six or 12 months ahead.

“As director of football I've got to make sure the wage bill comes down in the next two windows by a considerable amount.

“But I've got to maintain the competitiveness of the first team and ensure that we've got a team that plays with passion on the pitch.”

Despite holding a seat on the board, Gannon rejected suggestions that he has become unsackable. His immediate brief is to drag County away from the Blue Square Bet Premier relegation zone but revealed his long-term goal was to return the club to the Football League.

“I don't think any position at a club gives you security,” added Gannon.

“Being a director doesn't give me any more security. I know I'll be here as long as I'm doing a good job for this club and at the point that I'm not, it'll be time for me to leave.

“My first job is to get the best out of the current squad and as we re-shape the squad we need to look at areas we need to strengthen. It's a work in progress.

“At this stage, it's all about making sure we have success in the short term and turn things around.

“Our mission and our vision is to get back to the Football League and perhaps enter a new stadium as a Football League team."

Good luck to Jim Gannon in what seems to be a near impossible job that being getting County back up to the third tier of English football.
Jim has the ability to make a good start but long term I honestly believe heavy investment has to be made into the club, good luck to everyone concerned at Edgeley Park!

Amazed that sense has prevailed and the board has acted so quickly. Jim Gannon is quite simply, our only hope. Yes he is autocratic and because of that he will make mistakes and alienate some players (possibly very good players) to the point they leave. However, I am more than happy with the suggestion he in unsackable because what we need now is a long-term commitment to a guy who has unrivalled passion for County and thus will not stop until he brings success / stability. All we ask is a mid-table finish this season and then build from there. This appointment has the bonus of starting to bring the crowds back (my son and I will now be attending again for starters).
