Jim Gannon has taken charge at Stockport County for a second time after he was appointed Director of Football at Edgeley Park.
County have been without a manager since parting company with Dietmar Hamann last week. But while the club confirmed that Gannon will be responsible for first team selection and transfers, he has not taken on the title of manager.
And despite not officially appointing filling Hamann's role, and receiving more than 20 applications for the job, the Blue Square Bet Premier side are expected to contact the League Managers' Association today to confirm that the post has been filled.
Gannon, who will be assisted by current caretaker Willie McStay, has been out of work since his ill-fated spell at Port Vale ended in March. He will lead County for the first time at Fleetwood Town on Saturday.
Chairman Lord Peter Snape, who also confirmed that John Fitzpatrick for fans’ group Your Town, Your Team will join the board of directors, said: “I welcome the re-appointment of the most successful manager in the club’s recent history and look forward to working with James and our new colleagues on the board.”
What do you think? Have your say.

All good! We dont expect miracles -but mark my words we will finish in top 7 now!
Not Gannon's biggest fan, but he is County. Delighted that he is back at the club and the encouragement and undoubted joy this will bring to our supporter base. Needs to sort the wheat out from the chaff, get rid of those not good enough and bring some new blood that will fight for the cause.
Great news and it's what the majority of fans wanted. I'm not quite sure what " Director of Football " means, if he's not taken on the roll of manager. Anyway, it's put me back into a good mood and I can look forward with confidence now, but i'm not expecting immediate success because we have 2 tough games coming up. They say never go back, but this is just what the club needed, i'm sure some of the disillusioned fans will now return, good luck Jim
Jimmy Gannon's blue and white army :)
Now we at least have a chance to survive and even prosper. Whether you like him or not, only a fool could deny that Jim Gannon has the smarts to run the football club, from top to bottom. He's not just about football, he is an educated man with a great deal of business sense. Pity we can't clone him or give him more hours in the day. It is significant that he has not simply taken on the manager's job because it was him being barred as "just the manager" from board meetings, etc and frozen out of having any input into the operating decisions of the club, that was a major factor in the unnecessary fall into administration. I would now hope that the board/shareholders take full advantage of all that Jimbo has to offer with the minimum of behind the scenes conflict.
Hi bloody ho County :)
So the messiah has arrived ,where has he been working ? nowhere what does that tell you ,hope it works out but it won’t, rumor on the block is that Jimbos head (or what’s inside it) needs a bandage and treatment ,how many clubs have shown him the door since his SC days ,quite a few i think ,but Christmas comes and the days of milk and honey may be just around the corner. Watch this space teeeeheeee
Great appointment. Should put a few more bums on seats. Yes they say is you should never go back. However, I agree, it is just what the club needed to give everyone a lift.
Welome back Jimbo, a county legend.
good appointment for several reasons, more fans, better football, stopping the rot, leadership, effort, passion, control and more of a say in the running of the club.
Should he come back? he has so lets get on with it. Half this teams problem is effort, application and passion and they have a shock coming as that wont be tolerated. None of us have to be Jims biggest fan but he is what this club needs right now and I applaud that. Anyone else (with all due respect) wouldnt have worked in the time we have. So no miracles but a line in the sand and forward gear selected. Good Luck Jim.
still goin down!!
Jim'll fix it.... New banner for the pop side
Is the present squad, good enough to get out of this division?
And not a moment to soon. All the pussyfooting around the board have done appointing not only managers they don't want but who the supporters didn't want either. A very good man manager who not only knows how to pull a club from the brink of relegation but this time has the power to advise the board to pay its taxes and not just sit by while the club goes under. It'll bring fans back and can only have a positive effect on the players who lets face it under Hamann weren't playing to the full. Granted Jimbo has his work cut out and needs to do alot of dead heading before we start seeing results but this is where our season starts. The Ghost Returns!
