Stockport County v Cheltenham: Preview

David Poole
David Poole is desperate to help Stockport County make a quick return to the Football League.

Cheltenham’s visit to Edgeley Park will be County’s last game before they drop down into the Blue Square Bet Premier for the first time in more than 100 years.

But Poole, who is out of contract this summer, is determined to help the Hatters bounce back – if he is given the chance to extend his stay.

“I’d love to stay and be a part of the Stockport County team that won promotion back to the Football League,” said the former Manchester United academy player, who joined County for a second spell two years ago.

“We haven’t been told anything.

“A few of the lads are out of contract and I’m hoping we’ll hear something in the next week or so.

“We’ve got a good bunch of lads here and if we can keep most of them together and make a few additions I don’t see any reason why we cannot win promotion.”

The winger has made 31 appearances, scoring twice, during a traumatic season at Edgeley Park.

Current manager Ray Mathias is the third to take the reins since July after Paul Simpson was axed in January and Peter Ward was demoted just 12 games later.

Mathias, who arrived in February as a technical advisor to Ward, has applied for the job on a permanent basis, despite the board advertising the role on their website.
Poole, however, is backing Mathias.

“I would like him to stay,” said the 26-year-old.

“He’s picked up a few points since he’s come in and we’ve become a bit more consistent.

“He’s given us a bit of stability as well which is important. There’s been a lot of upheaval this season and we’ll need stability if we’re going to challenge for promotion next season.

“If you look at the top teams, that’s what they’ve got.

“But it’s up to the board and if it’s not Ray, then we’ll move on.”

Poole is targeting a last-day win against Cheltenham to bring some much-needed cheer back to Edgeley Park. And he says he will dedicate any victory to the Hatters fans.

“I think it’s important that we try to repay the fans and end the season on a high,” he said.

“They’ve followed us home and away even when the performances on the pitch haven’t been up to scratch.

“I think we owe it to the fans to win the last game of the season and give them something to shout about.”

No, no, no. IMHO not good enough for BSP and should be off loaded with the majority of the current squad.

Next season we need a team with at least one experienced hard nut in every department. A 'boot it over the stands' defender. A midfielder who'll put tackles in and break up play and a big carthorse of a centre forward who knows where the goals are.

Make no mistake if we start trying to play football in the BSP we'll be in the Conference North this time next season. Every game is going to be a scrap and there'll be absolutely no room for tippy tappy lightweight football.
