Stockport County

Accrington 3 Stockport County 0

Ray Mathias has been offered the Stockport County manager’s job – and was today thinking over his response.

In a shareholders’ meeting  caretaker boss Peter Ward was asked to step down to assistant manager, with former Wigan boss Mathias taking over.

“I have taken charge at Accrington but me and Peter will have a good talk about the situation. Peter was shocked but we are all in this for Stockport County and that’s the main thing – trying to keep them up,” said Mathias after last night’s demoralising defeat.

“I think the feelings of the players showed in the first half but that’s no excuse; we have 10 games left and we need 30 points.”

Bottom club County, with the worst defensive record in the league having conceded 79 goals prior to last night’s game, had three of their regular backline out and it got worse for when Jordan Rose hobbled off in the 23rd minute.

And it was three goals in 14 first-half minutes which killed off the Hatters, who came into the game with some confidence after winning against Oxford on Saturday.

First former Macclesfield defender Sean Hessey fired home a 25-yard free kick on  28 minutes.

Then Aaron Brown handled Sean McConville’s corner in the area on 35 minutes and Phil Edwards fired the spot-kick down the middle. In a disastrous night for Brown it was soon three when the tall defender miscontrolled the ball in the area and brought down McConville on 42 minutes – Edwards side-footed his penalty to his right this time.

County had kept it tight in the opening 20 minutes, but after that, strikers Anthony Elding and Matt Paterson barely saw the ball as the visitors became entrenched in their own half.

With Burton winning against Lincoln, it looks bleak for County and Mathias has a job on his hands.

Stockport County: McLoughlin 6 Goodall 5 Brown 5, Rose 5 (Poole 23 5) Turnbull 5, Tansey 6, Elding 5 (Fisher 66 5), Paterson 6, Griffin 5, Halls 5, Wallace 6. Subs not used: Lynch, Vincent, Rowe, Glennon, Whitehead.

This is Deja Vu, i'm sure i've written this before, we cant seem to win 2 in a row. With results going against us last night, Saturday's match with Burton is the cruncher. They know that if they win, they have a good chance of staying up, so they are going to be fired up. Our lads have got to win or else it's bye bye, i'm afraid. Listening to Pure before last nights game, there seemed to be some unrest in the management camp, not the best preparation for a vital game, lets just hope it's all sorted out before Saturday.

An absolute grade A shambles from top to bottom. It hurts, but this club is an absolute joke and those responsible should hang their collective heads in shame. The only asset now is the 4,000 odd fans that turn up week in, week out. Personally I wouldn't be against leaving EP, waving goodbye to Brian Kennedy and starting again from scratch. At least it would inject some fun back into the football. We've got nothing left now except the loyalty and support of a few die hards. Although their situation is different FC United showed it could be done and football could be handed back to the fans. The reports coming out of the club last night were staggering. Unprofessional doesn't even cover it.

Disappointing result last night especially after great win over Oxford - was expecting (hoping!!!) for at least a point at Stanley. Saturdays game against Burton will I think be 'Last Chance Saloon' and if County do not win this fixture then all hope, omens, supersticions will have gone out of window and like others have said - best prepare for the inevitable. It will be very sad for Stockport and their followers wherever they live. Kenny (Cornwall) now Cyprus

I liked Peter Ward anyway, he's given County years of sterling service, but he has gone up even more in my estimation. He alone is telling it like it is at County. He knows and cares that relegation is the least of County's worries. Without a massive change in the way the club is, or rather isn't being run, the very existence of Stockport County is increasingly in danger. Look through the Blue Square at all the former football league clubs who fail year after year to win their way back in and they are all in better shape than County. ALL of them. That is what is truly at stake and I applaud Wardy wholeheartedly for taking a stand and making a statement to try and get some action and leadership happening at the club. Realise County fans that Peter Ward knows that he has most likely sacked himself by speaking out but he would rather do that than toe the line and see the club continue to slide rapidly into oblivion. Wardy, I salute you, a man with principles.

Are we going to meekly leave the Football League after over 100 years without any kind of protest?

I know the true feelings of County fans. It's been a horror show. This is a historic moment. Let us mark it

revision - I hope you will ok this.....

Losing our league status looks like being the inevitable end to the disastrous era ushered in by Brian Kennedy and Cheshire Sports. I urge someone to rally County fans, to organise action, something which really gets noticed by the national media.

Well said, seejax, I posted a few weeks ago, that nobody seems interested in our plight. We just go from one bad game to the next, the fantastic fans turn up no matter what and the inevitable sad end is getting nearer and nearer. Where's Mike Newton ? is he bothered ? if so, he'd better get his arse in gear, because at the moment, this is the only straw we can clutch at. I also said earlier, its obvious the defence is the problem, last season we let in nearly 100 goals, has anything been done this time, no, we are on target to beat that this season, not much hope, have we ?

Every morning, I cant wait to turn on my laptop, hoping there's going to be some breaking news, either on this site or County's web site, regarding saving County from the inevitable, the drop into non league and/or oblivion. What do we get, Zilch, Nada, Nothing. Well, the change of dressing room for the Oxford game brought us a win, seems like we'll have to rely on that.
