STOCKPORT County's problems were cruelly exposed as a rampant Chesterfield exploited their defensive frailties at Saltergate.
Fans could have been forgiven for thinking County had turned the corner after recording Saturday's 1-0 victory over Peterborough.
But the old problems re-emerged, in particular an inability to defend against set-plays, and a complete lack of decent service to the stranded front men.
The 5-3-2 system, with three centre-backs, worked well against Peterborough, but the players asked to play it last night couldn't cope with Roy McFarland's bright side, who were intent on passing and moving while Stockport remained static.
County fell behind in the 17th minute when Sammy Clingan struck a superb volley from the edge of the area.
Keeper Neil Cutler had no chance, and four minutes later, former County player Shane Nicholson swung a free-kick into the area, which an unchallenged Zoa Tcham N`Toya met with a looping header.
Somehow, County reached half time just two down, but they slid further behind in the 51st minute when another Nicholson free-kick was nodded on by Ian Evatt for Steve Blatherwick to guide home with his head.
It was 67 minutes before County had a shot on target, Warren Feeney's efort being easily saved.
With seven minutes left, Danny Jackman's attempted headed clearance fell at the feet of Mark Allot who drilled the ball home for Chesterfield's fourth.
It was a particularly hard return for former Spireite striker Luke Beckett, who missed County's best chance after only seven minutes and had to endure catcalls from the Chesterfield fans for the rest of the evening.

Well surprise, surprise. We were absolutely useless. No .... we were much worse!! A total abomination. I will not go to Port Vale on Saturday now. I have a season ticket so am forced to go to home games but I will not endure any more away games. My lads under 11 side would literally give this Stockport team a decent game. USELESS!! Sack the Manager now!!!
I don't see why having a season ticket dictates that you must go to the home games. Given an alternative scenario say - that you purchased two many cream cakes and that made you physically sick you wouldn't want to do it again. You still bought the cakes!
I have two season tickets but I am fed up of feeling lousy, sick and tired of watching the crap we serve up. I won't return until the "clueless one" plus his "finger pointing muppett "that stands beside him have left.
McIlroy won't fall on his sword because he has a good salary and a track record over the past 4 years which he knows would guarantee him no football management ever again.
Brian "Rugby" Kennedy will only react when the gate revenue suggests that a new manager is his only other option. He is not worried about the quality or the Division we will be playing in as it is a side attraction to him.. He relies on 4000 diehards to prop up the main event and for now Sale are doing very nicely thank you.
When the crowds drop below 3000 and the loss of income exceeds what we are paying for supposed management then there will be some change perhaps.
I was at Saltergate last night. I am fed up of hearing that McIlroy knows what the problems are but he can't sort it out. We have a goalkeeper who is frightened of coming of his line. No he had no chance with the first goal last night but he could have cut out the cross that led to the corner. It was 5 yds out. His problem is exacerbated by having a back four with an ave height of approx 5ft 8 [ The full backs will be made up that I have averaged out height ] We have a midfield that generally get a nose bleed if they go over the half way line. Did you see a decent cross from Jackman? Maybe I missed one due to the fog. I certainly don't remember the shot on goal - I saw one go wide of the far post. Was that the one?
Quite frankly this is the worst SCFC side I have ever witnessed - I have had a season ticket for 28 years. I have always had a favourite player - we all do. I don't have any longer because I just can't get excited by a general lack of quality.
Some of these guys should have a long hard look at themselves - there is still time for some of them to get into a profession where they are not kidding themselves.
i think stockport played a very shabby game wednesday and we well deserved all 3 points , their defence is absolutly rubbish and is not capable of holding plasticine , your midfield is shocking - always trying to feed the bloke on the right (#25 i think) who was easily delt with by blathers !! and then we come to your forwards ( mr beckett & Co ) - give them a few words - BALL & BACK OF NET - you might stand a chance of staying up this season !!!
You cant keep swapping managers every year, look at Shef Wed! This time last season the Chesterfield fans were screaming for Roy MacFarland to be sacked, now he is the talk of the town, he was given time. Be patient and dont fall into the trap of bringing in a new manager every season, it dont work! I hope you pull yourselves out of this mess, you have a good club and excellent fans.
