Stockport County

Backing the Mac

STOCKPORT County skipper Danny Griffin believes that Saturday's impressive performance at highly-fancied Hull City showed everyone that the players and staff at the club are 100 per cent behind manager Sammy McIlroy as the second quarter of the season approaches.

Although a hugely satisfying draw was achieved at Hull at the weekend, it did prove to be something of a bitter-sweet experience as Blackpool's win at Port Vale consigned the Hatters to bottom spot in the League One table.

But Griffin has told the Express that the belief is most definitely there and that maybe back-to-back wins against Bury and Swindon can re-ignite the Edgeley Park fire.

The Northern Ireland international said: "The start we have had has been a bit hard to take, but the belief is there and deep down I know we are capable of turning things around.

"It's been one of those things this season, the gaffer brought in a few new faces in the summer and maybe they haven't quite gelled just yet.

"But we all know what jobs we've got to do so hopefully we can build on Saturday's result now.

"It was disappointing to see Blackpool had won convincingly at Port Vale, but it's up to us now to get that run together.

"If we were to just string two wins together that would give us six points and we'd move five or six places up the table.

"We know we can do it, and all the players are right behind the manager, I think that showed on Saturday at Hull when we dug deep and gave 110 per cent.

"We had three great chances to get that winning goal, it's up to us to get that ball in the back of net now.

"The opening day defeat by Huddersfield was a bitter blow after we had lead until so late in the game, and then we thought our luck had changed after the win at Blackpool.

"But that's in the past now and it's not about what anybody else is doing, it's about how we turn things around, and I'm confident that we will - hopefully starting this Saturday against Swindon."

Griffin later admitted that his comeback game against Luton 10 days ago - after six months out injured - was a gamble that didn't quite pay off, but every day he is feeling fitter, and that certainly showed at Hull where he had a fine game.

"I'm still taking things day by day," added Griffin, "My achilles is fine, I've had no reaction.

"Every day in training I'm feeling that bit sharper." And that's great news for all Couny fans surely.
