League gates most definitely on the up

THE newly-renamed Coca-Cola Football League kicked off in style last weekend with the highest opening weekend attendances since the 1965/66 season.

More than 380,000 people attended games in The Championship, League One and League Two at an average of more than 10,600 people per game - an increase of 9 per cent on last season's opening weekend.

This weekend's figures were boosted by bumper Championship crowds with Leeds United recording the biggest attendance of the day with 30,459, closely followed by the 30,231 at the Walkers Stadium to watch Leicester City play West Ham United.

While in League One, Sheffield Wednesday attracted almost 25,000 and Hull City almost 18,000.

Football League Head of Communications John Nagle said: "These figures are a tremendous way to start the new season."

"It is very encouraging to see that the public's appetite for live football is still on the increase at all levels of the professional game."
