Stockport County

County brave storm without any paddles

Hope for Stockport County seemed to finally wash away in the torrential rain at the New Den.

No owners, no money, 15 points from safety, no goals in nine and a half hours and a 5-0 defeat to contemplate on the long journey from South London to Stockport - professional football is not always as glamorous as it appears.

Even less so for the die-hard fans who have followed the Hatters up and down the country during this traumatic season.

Around 200 made the 400-mile round trip to Millwall on Saturday. The performance - complete with own goals from both Danny Swailes and Paul Huntington - prompted Gary Ablett to issue them with an apology.

"We've had fantastic support again from the couple of hundred fans who have come down and I'd like to thank them and apologise at the same time for the lack of quality in the performance," he said.

"I honestly think the scoreline flattered them. I thought we were culpable for all five goals once again.

"How are you supposed to compete in games when you gift teams five goals like that?

"I'm sure half our lads thought we were wearing blue today because we passed it to them that many times.

"There are no excuses," he added.

"We've prepared for the last three days in terms of how we wanted to play but you can't prepare for gifting teams goals.

"We've told the players that they've got to be brave and they've got to stand up and be counted and not enough of them did today.

"It's difficult to go in the dressing room and say the same things because at the moment it's falling on deaf ears.

"There are still eight games to go and it's going to be tough unless we get some confidence and get some belief but it's difficult to see where that's coming from at the moment.

"I'm very wary of fact that there's no positive news surrounding any aspect of the club. Whether that has an affect on the players, I don't know. It certainly has an effect on me at times."

In truth, the dire situation at Edgeley Park is making life very difficult for everyone connected with the club.

Goals from Steve Morison, Danny Schofield and Jonathan Obika, and a helping hand from Swailes and Huntington, handed Millwall a win they didn't really have to work for.

But County are all but down, and the results are becoming less and less important.

Hatters' fans would happily swap eight more 5-0 defeats for a secure future at their club.

COUNTY: Fon Williams 5, Mullins 5, Sadler 5, Huntington 5, Swailes 5, Partridge 5, Johnson 5, Turnbull 5, Perkins 6, Vincent 5 (Donnolly 60, 5), Ibehre 6.

What do you think? Have your say.

"Hatters' fans would happily swap eight more 5-0 defeats for a secure future at their club." Well I would certainly. I'm remembering 12 months ago when we had multiple parties interested in taking over the club and the administrators basically anointed the so-called consortium as the next owners. Now that the club has been asset stripped to the bone, it is hardly surprising that nobody is interested in taking the club on. Questions I want an answer to are, did the consortium ever have any intention of putting the money up to buy the club and how much did the administrators know of their intentions? I feel my club has been assassinated.
Now are you going to print this MEN? You haven't printed a number of my comments recently with a common thread being that they were comments critical of the administrators and the consortium. What's YOUR problem?

Perhaps Swailes and Huntington can play up front for the rest of the season, Huntington in particular has 2 in the last 2 games, yes I'm being sarcastic but it has got to a stage where I dread going to a game or listening to an away game. I was still a teenager in 69/70 season, the worst season I've witnessed, but heck things back then were laid back but now I'm approaching retirement and with the prospect of no club to support I'm dreading what I'll do in the winter months.

Stop feeling sorry for yourselves - you need to sort your ground issue out that's what's key in this takeover.

Once again his holeyness embarasses 40,000 City fans by showing his total ignorance of a situation he comments on. Why do you comment on here? All the City fans I know anyway, are just embarassed by your petty little sniping forays at the fans of a club that has a tenth of City's support, no home and no money. With the help of the arab oil money City are on the rise and soon to be battling the best in Europe. It's really very sad that you find more enjoyment from poking fun at a small club's troubles than in your own club's good fortunes. Let me guess, you were the nerdy kid who got bullied at school. Oh please Mr Pope, can you stop kicking sand in my face now, you big tough man you.
