Stockport County

Stockport hit rock bottom

STOCKPORT County hit rock bottom in League One after surrendering to relegation rivals Wycombe Wanderers.

Manager Gary Ablett had little sympathy for his players after the match and was scathing about their performance, declaring: "We didn't deserve anything because we weren't good enough."

The big talking point was the surprise inclusion of Matt McNeil on the County bench. The 33-year-old striker was released at the end of last season but McNeil answered Ablett's SOS and signed a one-month deal.

But his late contribution as a substitute couldn't salvage anything for County.

County were under the cosh for long periods but took the lead against the run of play thanks to a stunning strike from Carl Baker just after the hour - his 12th of the season.

But County couldn't hang onto their advantage and two goals in ten minutes saw Wycombe claim all three points.

Defender Chris Westwood headed the equaliser on 73 minutes after Johnny Mullins needlessly conceded a corner and there was a slice of luck about the winner as Scott Davies' speculative drive took a hefty deflection off County skipper Michael Raynes.

A demoralised Ablett said: "The only bit of quality we showed was the goal, other than that we were awful. We make so many wrong decisions at times it's disappointing and difficult to take any positives at all from the performance.

"We can't seem to raise our game against the teams in and around us and that could ultimately be our downfall."

It's now seven defeats in a row for County and Ablett will be hoping for a change in fortune when County entertain Torquay in their rearsecond round FA Cup tie.

COUNTY: Fon Williams 7, Ribeiro , Mullins 5, Raynes 6, Rose 6, Bridcutt 6 (Turnbull), Vincent 5, Tansey 5, Baker 6, Poole 5 (McNeil), Bignall 5 (Thompson)

Can Ablett save County? Have your say.

Not sure I agree about it being the worst trip home from an away game Alan. What about the 6-0 thunping at Macc although only a short trip home admittedly. I have to agree that this was a gutless showing from a team devoid of ability, commitment and confidence. Only Bridcutt was anywhere near the level of performance required. Ablett picks Vincent and Poole (completely shocking the pair of them all season) week in week out while the better options of Griffin, Halls, Pilkington and Oli Johnson generally warm the bench. And the decision to bring McNeil back is pure madness and just underlines the lack of vision and ambition at the club currently. And before anyone says there are no other options, there are plenty of professional footballers out of work and what about the loan opportunities? There have been many depressing times supporting County over the years and this ranks alongside the Chris Turner period a few years ago when we probably should have dropped out of the league. Then along came Jim Gannon to rescue us. Not sure there's anyone of his quality waiting in the wings but one thing is for sure, Ablett has completely run out of ideas and has to go!

Maybe we should appoint Roger Wylde as manager. Tranmere physio Les Parry isn't doing a bad job, since we beat them he's only lost a couple of games.

No other option... there I've said it. Out of work players are out of work for a reason. Too old, too weak, too bad, pick your player. What out of work proffessional player is fully fit at this stage of the season and able to step into a team and contribute 90 minuets. Loan players come from squads who are training and playing week in week out, but the management want their wages picking up from any side they go out on loan to. Blue square players are on better money than county can offer right now. Of course GA could spend the buget he has for four players on one good loan player but if two others get injured where does he go then. To the youth squad. I remember Chris Turner doing that and putting on a 16 year old on the pitch as a centre half when we were 2 nil down at one game. It was time to catch the bus home for me. Our play maker was a sixteen year old who had never played in the first team, do me a favour. The worst beating was at Macca but if we get beat 3 - 0 by Torquay tomoz it will be the lowest point since getting re-elected in the 70's. It's a tough time and the lingering talks are not helping. If these talks don't resolve soon I fear we could fold completely. Then we must turn the spotlight on Brain Kennedy who asset stripped the club in the first place.

Just looked at Torquay website, County suggested the game be switched to Torquay, bad idea their record there is one of the worst in County history, the FA suggested they find another venue in Cheshire to play the game on the 15th.

If Ablett went who would take up the mantle..........
It really needs someone with connections who could maybe take some youth players on loan from city or united
Jimmy G was unorthodox in his managerial skills but the players obviously had their belief and played for him
I can never understand these multi millionaire players who dont put it back into the game. We could do with selling the whole club to an ex player for a quid - like Birmingham did to Gold and let them invest in it. Apparantly Beckham wants to buy a franchise in Msl - why not England. Isn't Darren Ferguson still available as a manager- Sell his Dad the club and he could buy his son a job :)

This is the darkest time in four and a half decades as a County fan. It is the worst of all times because the club have no assets (ground) for financial security and because the "ownership", whatever their game is, have shown one thing right from the start, that they have no intention of putting any money into the club. Taking those facts into account, how can Stockport County AFC survive?
FTR, who sold the ground to Cheshire Sports and BK? Like it or not, CS have only done exactly what they said they were going to do when they were sold the ground along with a football club that they didn't want. Let's be even more honest about it, CS were suckered into buying the football club that was an unimaginable disaster only because they needed a bigger ground for Sale Sharks. The same guy who suckered them into buying that already ruined football club (they never wanted and only to discover that the actual state it was in made it unsellable) was also the same guy who was eventually proven to have unfairly dismissed, lied about and also did everything in his power to see Danny Bergara never got another managers job in football. All legally established as fact when DB won his unfair dismissal case years later when his football career had already been ruined.
Cheshire Sports on the other hand have merely acted in a businesslike manner, their business being Sale Sharks. Did you really expect them to sacrifice Sale Sharks for Stockport County?
What are the consortium up to? Is there a County FC of Stockport in our futures because Stockport County have been allowed to die?
