CARL Baker’s injury time penalty rescued a point for Stockport County against Southampton at Edgeley Park.
Rickie Lambert’s controversial penalty had given Southampton the lead in first half injury time, but Baker was on hand to score with the last kick of the game to extend County’s unbeaten run to two games.
County were the first to threaten with three minutes on the clock but Baker could only drag his shot wide from 12 yards.
Danny Pilkington forced Kelvin Davis to save low to his left after connecting with Johnny Mullins’ right-wing cross on 22 minutes.
And Davis was called into action again when Peter Thompson was alert enough to divert Baker’s shot goalwards but the Northern Ireland international couldn’t find enough power to trouble the Southampton skipper.
Owain Fon Williams then kept out Adam Lallana’s header but with time running out in the first half, referee Mr Boyeson stunned the County players by awarding a penalty for handball in the melee after Lallana’s corner.
Former County man Lambert stepped up to smash the ball past Williams from 12 yards to the disgust of the County fans behind the goal.
Lambert nearly doubled Southampton’s lead early in the second half when he saw his header beat Williams but not the crossbar.
Marek Saganowski thought he had made it 2-0 after 69 minutes but his effort was ruled out for offside.
County looked the most likely to score as they pushed for an equaliser, and their pressure finally paid off in stoppage time when Carl Baker floated the ball into the box and Thompson’s effort was handled in the box.
Baker grabbed the ball to score his second penalty in two games to earn County a vital point.

now spread across various other league teams, to gain a draw against ex- Championship "talent" was an excellent result. However, I thought Southampton were a shambles, more so, their pathetic whinging manager who has been sacked from more jobs than Carlton Palmer. His post match whinge was a disgrace (watch on BBC website). Both teams had reason to complain about the duff ref. but the final penalty for County was justification for all the previous poor referring decisions. I just hope we can hang on to the likes of Baker, Fon Williams and Rose (who was superb)
