Ricketts, who spent last season at League One rivals Walsall, is currently training with the Hatters in a bid to earn a permanent deal at Edgeley Park.
However, even if Ricketts impresses boss Gary Ablett the deal will not be able to be completed until County officially come out of administration on August 1.
Other trialists including Adam Griffin, David Poole and Gianluca Havern – who have all played a part in County’s four pre-season games – are also waiting to discover whether they will be offered deals.
Ricketts - who could now play a part in County’s friendly against Linfield on Saturday - has had spells Bolton Wanderers, Middlesbrough, Leeds United and Oldham Athletic.
He has won one cap for England, appearing against Holland in 2002.

Sad if the extent of county's ambition is to sign a player like Ricketts, a typical journeyman who is lucky to get a year where-ever he goes.
I agree. This is a stop gap player. We have no money for talented young players, The object is to stay in Div 1 next season, if journeymen are available that can do a job that keeps us away from the drop then we may as well sign them until the gaffer can work out some decent loan deals and bring through some of the acadamy players. It's going to be a tough season. I can see 52 points being our best goal for May next year.

The Pope and Ferrari must have incredibly sad lives if all they can do is continually post derisory comments about County and their fans.
