Stockport County

Gannon can count on McSweeney

STOCKPORT can count on the versatile Leon McSweeney to fill in as a striker when called upon.

McSweeney, who has already played at right back and on the right wing this season, found himself drafted into a forward role in Saturday's victory over Southend.

The absence of Dave Mooney, Matty McNeil and Peter Thompson through injury or illness forced the decision to play the 25-year-old Irishman out of what is seen as his accustomed positions.

But it shouldn't have been too much of a surprise to see McSweeney helping out up front, according to County boss Jim Gannon.

"People forget that Leon was a centre forward at Cork and was adapted to the right wing," he said. "Since then we've converted him successfully to right wing back.

"Such versatility shows the quality of the players we have at the club. We have plenty who can play in several positions

"Leon's was one of the most pleasing performances for me against Southend.

"He kept the game long for us, he competed well with two big centre-halves and brought people into the game.

"He set up the third goal excellently and it was just a shame that he didn't get any goal-scoring opportunities.

"He played a huge part in that victory."

Meanwhile, County are expecting to be backed by 2,000 fans for Saturday's promotion clash against Oldham Athletic at Boundary Park.

More than 1,500 tickets have already been sold to County fans. Tickets are now on open sale at Edgeley Park.
