Yet another graduate of County's Centre of Excellence, Wythenshawe-born centre-half Raynes is a key member of the first-team set-up at Edgeley Park. Raynes made his first-team bow against Swansea City aged seventeen in December 2004. He made the transtition into League football seamlessly, playing with a maturity and presence that belied his tender years and his outstanding performances saw him become a first-team regular soon after his debut. Raynes' consistency throughout the second half of the 2004-05 campaign was recognised with him being awarded County's Young Player of the Year, despite the fact that he did not sign his first professional contract with the club until the March of that season. His meteoric rise from a promising youth into a first-team regular caught the eye of a number of Premier League clubs, including Liverpool and West Bromwich Albion who monitored Raynes throughout the 2005-06 season, but a frustrating period of niggling injuries threatened to stall the youngster's burgeoning career. After missing much of the 2006-07 season, Raynes returned to play an important role in County's promotion-winning 2007-08 campaign and the fact that he had made over 90 first-team appearances by the age of 20 is testament to the fact that, if he can steer clear of injury, Raynes is a player with a big future in the game.
