ON THE UP: County celebrate at Wembley
STOCKPORT County boss Jim Gannon believes his play-off heroes are destined for great things.

His young eagles secured their place in League One with a 3-2 victory over Rochdale in front of more than 35,000 fans at Wembley yesterday with second-half goals from Anthony Pilkington and Liam Dickinson.

The win guaranteed County's first promotion in 11 years and the prospect of welcoming the likes of Leeds and Leicester to Edgeley Park next season.

But the County superkids have already drawn admiring glances from other clubs and Gannon knows he might find some of his young aces moving on.

He said: "I hope that we become a role model for all clubs at this level.

"Over the past two years we have brought through a group of young players who, given the right circumstances, could play really good, effective football. It would be nice to keep them together but some of them are destined for great things.

"We have always had the philosophy that if the right offer comes in we would allow them to discuss it with those clubs."

Gannon was a key player in the Stockport side that won two promotions in the 1990s and believes his young side could go on to repeat that achievement - if he can keep the squad together.

"To see the club go from the lower reaches of the fourth division to the top of the Championship was a great experience," he added.

"Why couldn't that happen again? It would be tougher now but this club is on the up."

County will hold a civic reception tonight at 7.30pm, when an open top bus will leave Caroline Street travelling along Mercean Way and Greek Street before crossing the A6 Wellington Road South and immediately left into Lacy Street behind Stockport Town Hall.

Football facts of life, other teams will want your good players but on the positive side it makes County a very attractive club to sign for when playing and being coached at County can be seen as such a positive step in a player's career, and particularily young players' careers.
Of course the higher you go in the league, the less teams there are who can attract your players with a higher level of football.
So have a good summer boys, you've earned it, and come back ready and rarin' to go when next season begins.
Up the County!
