But Hereford's victrory over at Brentford meant that even a draw would not have been enough for Jimn Gannon's side, who are now looking to get into League One via the playoffs.
Tommy Rowe hit the post early on and Stephen Gleeson had a goalbound effort blocked in a lively opening.
Barnet officials had to apologise at half-time for a Tannoy announcement during the first-half that Hereford were winning at Brentford.
County went behind two minutes after the break when Jason Puncheon followed up his blocked free-kick with a shot inside the post. Rowe equalised four minutes later with a shot lifted over keeper Lee Harrison from the edge of the Barnet penalty area.
But in the 81st minute sub Danny Hart crossed for Cliff Akurang to beat County keeper John Ruddy with a diving header.

Reaching the playoffs is nice and it is further progress but it would be a crying shame to get less out of this season than we deserve and we haven't won anything yet.
I dearly hope we stuff Chester for other reasons too. Their refusal to make the first game all ticket when it was obvious it would be a close to capacity crowd for them and their limiting of vouchers for County fans in the replay, inferring that there were many less County fans at the first game than the facts suggest, just screams out that there's fiddling going on.
I wouldn't wish it on any team but if I was the taxman, I'ld be more than a little curious about their reported crowd sizes and gate monies declared.
Anyway, back to our business and the most important reason for County to do well in the next two games is to get ready for the playoffs.
Come on County

Incidentally, best wishes to Rotherham fans too in their struggles. Whether some haters want to believe it or not, we are all in this together. Even the biggest of clubs aren't immune to the kind of crap being pulled by Rotherham's owners for one example or previous owners of County of course for more examples.
