Stockport County

Gannon salutes history boys

Ashley Williams
STOCKPORT County equalled a Football League record with an eighth consecutive away win in a single season and boss Jim Gannon is determined this time the Hatters' history-making will be turned into promotion.

Last season, County set a record of nine straight wins without conceding a goal, but still missed out on the play-offs.

"Last year the records meant nothing as we achieved nothing," said Gannon.

"This year hopefully the records will mean something as we'll achieve something.

"It's in our own hands as we've got to play all the top sides and they've all got to play each other and we'll just keep marching on. The lads have been doing the performing, I'm just supporting them, and they deserve all the plaudits."

Sub David Poole's 68th-minute winner sent County up to fifth spot with a hard-fought victory at Sincil Bank. The introduction of Poole and Adam Proudlock off the bench early in the second-half paid off when they combined for the goal.

Poole's left-footed strike went through a crowd of players after Lincoln keeper Alan Marriott had failed to deal with Proudlock's corner.

Stockport keeper John Ruddy made a spectacular save in injury time to keep out Jamie Forrester's deflected shot to secure County's fifth win on the trot.

"At the end we were absolutely delighted with the three points because it was a tough game," added Gannon. "And to cap it all off by getting a League record is fantastic for the players. It was great to see them all celebrating in front of the hardcore faithful who'd come all the way here to see another record broken."

County have officially the best away following in League Two with 1,000 fans making the trip to Lincoln.

Gannon singled out midfielder Dominic Blizzard for special praise. "He was my man-of-the-match by far. He seemed to be the one player who was able to cushion and push the ball around. He was awesome in terms of his athleticism, his work-rate and the way he covers for the team and kept the ball moving.

"He's a top-drawer defensive midfielder. It was an outstanding performance from him."

Meanwhile, Stockport skipper Ashley Williams has received his first international call-up. The 23-year-old has made it into John Toshack's squad for Wales' friendly in Luxembourg a week on Wednesday.

Wonderful achievement by county to rewrite the league record books for the second time in 2 seasons, even if so far its only equiled the old record. Its also a great testiment to Jim Gannons ability to spot a good player, with Ash Williams getting a call up to the Wales squad. This player had been on the verge of being disgarded by county when Jim took over and put him back in the team. Over the past 2 seasons he has become one of the best central defenders in the division, and if county dont get promoted he will be playing in a higher division next season.

These are special days indeed when the biggest threat to County rewriting the Football League record books for the second consecutive season is that our captain has been called up for international duty!! Would never have thought I personally could be prouder to be a Stockport County fan but after all these years........it just goes to show, never say never 8-)

How fantastic that Jim Gannon has put Ashley Williams International future before the club. He could play for county on Monday at Wycombe and go on to the Wales training camp. Jim however has decided that the player should enjoy the full occasion of being called up and will release him to attend the Wales camp immediatly after the home game on Friday evening. Good luck to Ash. for one game at least the whole of the county following will be supporting the red dragons next week.
