Stockport County

Preview: Stockport v Notts County

JIM Gannon hopes his Stockport County side can be inspired by last season's heroics to continue their fantastic run of results.

Six wins in an unbeaten streak of seven league games have taken County to within touching distance of the League Two play-offs.

Their good form is reminiscent of this time last year when County made league history with nine straight wins without conceding a goal.

"We'll take it one game at a time," said Gannon, whose side play Notts County at Edgeley Park on Saturday.

"That's what we did last year when we made history.

"We had a lot of problems at the start of the season with injures and poor refereeing.

"We worked through that and out of the last ten games we've won eight, drawn one and the only defeat was when a player was sent off in the wrong fashion.

"We've overcome a lot of obstacles this season and I know that when we're at our best we're very, very good. We just have to keep it going now.

"We've added players and they're adding something to the team.

"There's a great mentality, considering they're so young.

Passion

"There's skill, there's passion, there's grit and determination. Those are the reasons why the lads have gone on such a good run."

County have taken maximum points from the past week's trips to Dagenham and Bury and now face the prospect of playing on an Edgeley Park pitch that is starting to suffer from the combination of Sale Sharks rugby and the football being played on it.

"I can't give the lads enough credit for getting back-to-back away wins at two difficult places against two teams fighting for points," added Gannon.

"It's not the greatest surface at Edgeley Park, but to be fair we've still tried to play and I don't want to use that as an excuse.

"The pitch is the way it is, but I ask the lads to concentrate on what they have to do.

"They must control what they can control and accept what they can't control, such as the pitch."

Striker Anthony Pilkington, who scored twice in Tuesday's 3-2 victory at Bury, should be ready despite hobbling off late in the game at Gigg Lane.

Midfielder Paul Turnbull, who has missed the last two games, should also be available.

Gannon added: "We knew at the start of the season there wouldn't be too many players who would play all 46 games.

"When it's time to play their part they'll play their part.

"I think everybody has played a huge part so far and everyone will still play a huge part from now until the end of the season.

"It's nice to have players back. We've got a good squad at the moment."

Last season: Stockport 2 Notts County 0

Key opponent: Richard Butcher - Scored two in his last three

Prediction: Stockport 2 Notts County 0 - It should be three points at home for County

Another tight game with a home win by 1-0, Proudlock coming off the bench to grab the winner.
Just noticed that Ellison is staying at Chester. Maybe not a bad thing as the proposed move seemed to split the fans. Lets hope Jim can get another forward signed up soon, as although we scored 3 on Tuesday we looked short of an out and out centre forward to replace Elding.

I find it really interesting about the fans split over Ellison. Not necessarily a bad thing, it's often a sign of a strong character and maybe not much patience with under-achievment, if that's a real word!
Personally I'm happy to trust JG's judgement. Like others, I may not understand what he's trying to do sometimes and of course like anybody else he's bound to make mistakes but a) it's surely a huge plus that he isn't scared to try different things and b) how can anybody seriously argue with what has been and continues to be achieved at EP? Compared to the previous seasons as County slithered out of the championship, down the league and virtually out of the league, overall it must be admitted that our fortunes have improved significantly in this Jimbo era and that's my reasoning anyway.
This Saturday, I think Dicko's due for a goal isn't he and Proudlock's due for one of his "Wycombe" games too. 3 points would make my weekend whoever fills the old onion bag.
Come on the (Stockport) County,
8-)

So now we know the truth, county cant afford to sign Ellison, because they are running a squad which exceeds the playing budget, and the cupboard is bare. You have to ask why was the signing announced in the first place. All I can say is come on county lets get the job done with what we have, the current players are good enough to see us get at least to the play-offs.
