But the League One side would have to increase their valuation of the striker - who has scored 14 goals this season - for the matter to go any further.
Elding has scored in each of County's last four league games and was expected to attract attention during the January transfer window.
Meanwhile, County are making the most of their enforced two-and-a-half week break from league action.
With last Saturday's derby at Bury postponed because of a waterlogged Gigg Lane pitch and no game this Saturday, Jim Gannon's side have to wait until Tuesday to see if they can extend their four-game winning streak at home to Chesterfield.
But assistant boss Peter Ward is certain the players will emerge stronger from concentrating on their training.
"It was a big disappointment to lose last weekend's derby game to the weather," said Ward. "There would have been a big crowd at Gigg Lane and all the lads were really looking forward to it.
"It's not been great because we've been on a good run lately and all the lads are fired up.
Confident
"But the break from League action has given us a chance to do a lot of work on the coaching side of things.
"We're not the finished article yet by any means, but the lads are full of confidence after winning four games on the bounce and the training sessions have really gone up a gear. The challenges are there for the lads, and they are all ready for them."
And Ward is certain that the return of captain Ashley Williams and vice-captain Gareth Owen from lengthy lay-offs will boost County's chances of reaching the League Two playoffs.
The centre-half partners were due to play in Saturday's Manchester Senior Cup tie against Manchester City, but that game has been postponed to protect the Edgeley Park pitch before the Chesterfield game.
"Ashley has enjoyed 10 days of hard training now and he's looking in good shape," added Ward.
"Gaz will join in training today and then should be OK for Saturday.
"Our physio Rodger Wylde is optimistic that both of them will be available for Tuesday's game against Chesterfield too. It's great news for the club.
"Ashley and Gaz are captain and vice-captain, and any team would miss them. They're both major players and were ever-presents in our nine-match winning streak earlier this year."

Cant see where the fight will be. Elding is happy now at county, and a move to Hartlepool would not be a step up in my opinion, and I cant believe they would want to spend anything like a decent fee, as their club record is only £150k (I think)
If He was to go who would replace him? Scott taylor has just been released!!
I still don't think the matter is settled, could take £150k and Ian Moore in swap, but if Proudy stays and Diko and the Van driver get fit then moore would fit in two fat lads up front, kick it run, maybe not
