That's the opinion of boss Jim Gannon after two wins on the bounce have pushed his side to within five points of the top seven.
Saturday's victory at neighbours Macclesfield Town lifted County into the top-half of the table, but Gannon warned against any complacency.
"On any other day if we give away that sort of possession, and those sort of chances, then we are not going to get too many clean sheets," said Gannon.
"If we want to push up the league then we've got to be much stronger in the defensive department.
"We've had a difficult three or four months with injuries, and while the boys are starting to take some of our ideas on board, there's still too much inconsistency.
"We have to work hard on the training ground to improve the consistency, consolidate what we've got and push on to reinforce the new things we've brought into the side."
Meanwhile, Jason Taylor faces a race against time to be fit for Saturday's home game against Grimsby.
Midfielder Taylor suffered an ankle injury in the victory at Macclesfield.

Very sad to see that Keith Briggs has been released by county, He has been a decent player who covered in both defence and mid-field, and its a great pity that injury has hindered his chances of getting an extension to the 6 month deal he currently has. I know county fans will give both Briggs and Bowler (also released) a good send off at Saturdays game, when Briggs may well play as cover for Taylor.
Big test for Gannon on Saturday, McNeil is fit so will he change a winning team and drop Dickinson and Proudlock who between them have scored 6 goals in two games or drop Raynes who was in Gannons own words was outstanding at Moss Rose.
Will be intresting to see if Gannon will risk his credibility for the sake of him playing his favorate.
