Svetoslav Todorov started to torment the visitors midway through the first half though.
He twice went close before finally grabbing the opening goal on 35 minutes. And what a great strike it was from 25 yards.
Controversy followed five minutes later, however. County kid Michael Bowler felled Izale McLeod in the box, and McLeod's resultant spot-kick was saved by Conrad Logan.
But referee Mr Hall insisted Logan had moved off his line, and Zheng Zhi made no mistake with the re-taken effort.
Prospects looked pretty grim for Stockport at the interval, but two well-taken goals from Proudlock (55 mins) and Elding (62) really set the pulses racing.
When Dominic Blizzard superbly drove home another on 70 minutes, County's travelling fans almost went berserk.
Lloyd Sam drew the sides level at 3-3 five minutes later, then Todorov smashed a shot against the crossbar with six minutes to go. However, McCarthy was to have the final word right at the death.
