The club have struck a provisional mortgage deal which would give them the funds to purchase Edgeley Park from current owner Brian Kennedy.
County are hoping that they can get the money in place to buy back the ground in time for the club's 125th anniversary celebrations next year.
Sale Sharks owner Kennedy bought the ground, as well as County, through his company Cheshire Sports in 2003 when the rugby union side moved in.
But when County's Supporters Trust bought the club from Kennedy in 2005, it included an option to buy back Edgeley Park within eight years.
Stockport's board have spent the two years since then trying to find money to buy the ground, owned by Kennedy, and the Stockport Council-owned Booth Street depot behind the Railway End.
Deal
The club's directors have decided that the best way to go ahead is to get a mortgage to buy the ground, and try to strike a deal with the council which would see the depot become part of a major regeneration project planned for Edgeley.
County managing director Mark Maguire explained: "The biggest problem we have had in trying to buy back the ground is that the club doesn't have any assets, which makes it difficult if you're going to a bank to try to get a loan.
"We went to the council a year ago to discuss trying to buy the Booth Street depot first, with a view to having an asset as security to allow us to get a loan to buy the ground.
"But we changed tack, and decided that it would be better to develop partnerships with organisations who might want to develop land around the ground. We talked to various interested parties, and we have now been given a provisional offer of a mortgage."
County do not need to enter negotiations with Cheshire Sports to buy back the ground, as the two parties had already agreed the deal when the Supporters' Trust bought the club.
And the board are continuing to work with Stockport Council to look at ways of developing the Booth Street depot.
"We're aware of how improtant it is to use that land for the benefit of the people of Edgeley, not just of the football club," Maguire added.
"From our point of view, it's an important shift in position from the way the club perhaps thought in the past when it was trying to buy the depot."

I think this is a fantastic move for County, considering that Kennedy, through the thin veil of 'I've put money into County to keep it afloat', he's done more harm than good.
I think the closer County can go towards erradicating this disease that is Brian Kennedy the better.
IO County
I agree it is great news for County fans and more evidence of the forward thinking and building toward a bright future. Before we bought our club in the still very recent past, the question was did SCFC even have a future?
Well done to EVERYBODY connected to the club who have contributed to the very resurrection of this club and the restoration of our pride and optimism for a bright future.
Go go go County!
Cant wait until County again own Edgeley Park and we can then tell Kennedy and his Sale lot to get the hell out of the Town of Stockport.
Does that mean the egg chasers go?
Come on Stockport Council get involved stop sitting on the fence, Get Dave Goddard involved with the football club he's forgotten where he came from!
Why dont the council buy it and lease it back to countyon a 250 year lease like manchester City have. It would ensure that the club will always belong to the people of stockport and stop any other "invester" stepping in to "help" if the club struggles. Even if they just provide a deposit for the mortgage and own part of the ground it would help.
By the way........Well done lads keep up the good start to the season
Kennedy took us to Division two and then he wants to charge us four million to buy back OUR ground? He's got some nerve. Should we not consider putting the money towards building a new 20,000 stadium? It will generate new support and it will take the club to the next level.
