THE Football League have backed referee Dean Whitestone after Stockport County made an official complaint over the postponement of their game at Bristol Rovers last month.

The decision to call off the League Two match on Saturday, February 24, because of a waterlogged pitch infuriated County boss Jim Gannon, who accused Rovers of not doing enough to protect it.

But a statement issued by the Football League supported Whitestone's part in the dispute. It read: "As far as the League is concerned the referee's decision to postpone the first match is not in question.

"The referee has sole discretion over whether a pitch is playable or not and the League supports the decision made in this regard."

Gannon also criticised the Football League's decision to appoint Whitestone to referee the re-arranged game, which Rovers won 2-1 on Tuesday night.
