GARY Croft makes his debut after joining Wigan from Ipswich. He has been recruited to ease injury-hit Athletic's defensive problems.
Croft could start at right back with either Scott Green or the influential Ged Brannan switched to centre-half.
Former Manchester United junior Pat McGibbon is the only fit centre-half available for selection.
Skipper Arjan de Zeeuw faces a late fitness test on a hamstring injury and Jason De Vos is away on international duty with Canada in the Gold Cup.
Simon Haworth hopes to start up front after scoring for the reserves in midweek. The Welsh international may come in for Lee McCulloch who partnered Andy Liddell in the 3-0 win over Brighton.
Matt Jackson could be out for three weeks after dislocating a knee-cap.
Last season: Brentford 2 Wigan 2
Key opponent: Lloyd Owusu, a quick striker in a rich vein of form
