Lazio linked with United's nemesis

MANCHESTER United fans will be licking their lips with the news that Lazio are set to make an ambitious bid to sign Liverpool forward Michael Owen.

Owen scored in the Charity Shield victory, two more in this month’s 3-1 victory for the Merseysiders and has been part of the Liverpool team that have now racked up four consecutive victories over Sir Alex Ferguson’s side.

Undoubtedly he is a player United would be happy to see far less of and they are likely to be heartened by the news that the Lazio’s president Sergio Cragnotti is desperate to land the England star and is even willing to personally finance the deal.

'Talent of a champion'

“I want Owen. He is a player I would have liked to have had at Lazio for some time now,” Cragnotti told The Sun.

“Owen has the talent of an absolute champion. I think he deserves the European player of the year award.

“It won’t be easy to rip him away from Liverpool – but we are going to try.”

Saying how he would finance his club’s latest buying spree, he said: “I want a Lazio with a £300 million turnover. To build this we need further income.

“We will sell 20 per cent of the club but not just to anyone. I am looking for trustworthy partners.”

Would Owen leaving Liverpool be great news, or would it be bad for the Premiership.
