Kiely boost for Bury

The Shakers have received a much needed cash-boost thanks to the exploits of former ‘keeper Dean Kiely.

The Irish ‘keeper has excelled as Charlton’s number one, notching up ninety appearances for the South London side, which means a cash windfall of £50,000 is winging its way to the Shakers this week.

The 31-year-old signed for Bury from York in 1996 for £125,000, and went on to establish himself as one of the game’s most highly rated ‘keepers in his 137 league appearances at Gigg Lane.

A big money move became inevitable and Kiely upped sticks for the Valley in 1999 for £1m, but remains a Gigg Lane legend following the save from a penalty against Watford in 1997 that ensured automatic promotion for The Shakers from Division One in 1997.

And four years on, he’s still proving his worth to the side.
